Reviews - What do our customers think?
OUTSTANDING  May 21, 2010
In a world full of mediocre Christian nonfiction, this book has radically changed our lives. It is not for the average believer, since it suggests challenges that most Christians will scoff at, saying she is too extreme. I want to be an extreme Christian, as close to Jesus as I can be, and this book is just what I needed.
It questions your heart, your actions and your desires to be what God wants you to be. She is not afraid to ask the outrageous of you in your daily walk, and if you step up and follow through, you will not believe the changes in your life.
God has done so much in our lives because of lifestyle changes we have made due to reading this book, that I am shocked and look forward to more growth as we continue to hear his voice. If you read with an attitude of how you can meet God more intimately, and are open to big changes, you will see great changes. Easy? NO/. Worth it? YES.

A Call to Arms  Apr 24, 2010
I have read other books by Leslie Ludy. But this one really was unlike the others. Not because of a lack of passion or anything like that. In this book, Set-Apart Femininity, there is call to arms. Ladies, accept that God honored call and opposed to being so self-centered, become more God centered.

I got so much out of this. Her website was so incredibly helpful too, and I urge you not to just read her books but also go check out the website, [...]. I really loved Ludys example of the man (in modern days) who gave everything up for Jesus..I'm not going to spoil it for you, if you want to check it out, but I will say that the story of that man has stuck with me and I really know God has spoken through Leslie to deliver his message.

Appears to question the sovereignty of God as presented in Scripture?...  Apr 1, 2010
I really enjoyed this book up until the chapters where Ludy begins to subtlely question the doctrine of God's sovereignty. Yes, the book was a little repetetive and I had a few minor issues, but I thought Leslie had done a really great job of challenging teen girls to be set-apart from the world. That is, until she repeatedly asserted (somewhat indrectly) that Satan has his own power apart from God. Ludy says that she had mistakenly believed that God causes or allows all things. But that she NOW knows that it isn't true. A careful reading of this chapter (can't remember which one specifically; gave it back to my baby sister) makes it seem that Ludy spends little time in the Old Testament, particularly the book of Job. Her list of things that do not come from God begs the question: If anything that might possibly have a negative effect in our life is not from God and is from Satan, is God powerless to stop it? Her handling of this topic is really head-scratching, particularly after the solid content of the previous chapters.

One other comment: while much of what Leslie presents in the early chapters has been gleaned from the Bible and is solid instruction, not a lot of what she writes pushes the reader toward Scripture for themselves. I wish she would have taken more time to give credit to where she got her ideas and to push girls to study God for themselves firsthand from His Word.

Ridiculous.  Jan 18, 2010
This book was incredibly dull and drawn-out, akin to a laborious "lecture" as another reviewer said. Furthermore, as Ludy tells everyone how to live their lives as "set-apart women" for God, she reeks of pride for her own achievements and where she is currently in her spiritual life. I feel that this book is good in theory, but needs a huge helping of humility to get it where it needs to be. I was disgusted by her attitude, particularly the direct defamation of Lima (as others have mentioned as well). Wow. Tacky much?! I went to Ludy's website and her "Cleaning out the Sanctuary" tool was incredibly legalistic, as well. I do not recommend this book in any way, shape, or form. We don't need a step-by-step guide written with a sickeningly sweet and sappy narrative. And while Ludy is supposedly caring so much about being "set-apart" from our current culture of personal desires and greed, she's written over 14 repetitive books, holds costly conferences, and charges a good amount for speaking engagements making a profit off of the Gospel....just as Christ wanted, right?

I'm sure they're a great family. They should just not be writing books.

If you're looking for ways to improve your walk with Christ, HUMBLY, and becoming a better "set-apart" kind of person, I highly suggest reading "The Irresistible Revolution" by Shane Claiborne, or just try the Bible, and follow those examples.

Not Impressed.  Jan 13, 2010
I was at my local Barnes & Noble (can I say that in an this site review?) and picked up this book, thinking it would be a good read. It is now back on the shelves.

While the overall message I thought was good, and I have no doubt that Mrs. Ludy is a wonderful Christian young woman, there were some details I just couldn't get over. First, her writing. It's certainly not superior and she gets redundant. Like, "Holy crap, I'm reading a broken record" redundant. After the first chapter she really had nothing new to say. I also think it's geared more towards younger, middle school aged girls versus older (I'm 20) ones. It was very basic and unfortunately for Leslie, I was looking for something meatier.

There was also a whole page dedicated to hating on "Captivating" (a book I thoroughly enjoyed) because it didn't encourage women to look for their beauty in Christ, but rather in themselves. Excuse me? That whole book was about seeking our beauty in Christ. I was annoyed, but moved on, knowing that was just her opinion. Later she talks about "American Idol" being bad because it has "Idol" in the title and that encourages idolatry. At that point I shut the book and returned it.

If you're not yet 16 and want a very surface-riding, unsophisticated book, this is great. As much as I didn't enjoy it, the core message is fantastic and much needed.

However, if you're older and want a more challenging and inspiring experience, I recommend "Captivating," much to Leslie Ludy's dismay. I promise it's Christ-centered and will not lead you astray. It digs much deeper, is written better, and won't make you feel bad for watching people sing on TV.
