Item Description...
Overview
The first Christians were members of households, possibly associations and certaiinly cities in the first-century Graeco-Roman World before they embrace the preaching of the gospel. This first of six volumes study maps out the roles and obligations of Christians as benefactors and citizens in their society. The scholarly insight is enhanced though the selective use of important ancient literary and nonliterary sources. Contrary to the popular perception that early Christians withdrew from society and sought to maintain a low profile, this study explores the complexities of the positive commitments made by Christians in Gentile regions of the Roman Empire.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Engaging the City  Oct 4, 2006
Bruce Winter's Seek the Welfare of the City makes the convincing case that--biblically speaking and historically so--Christians were expected to engage the societies in which they lived--to the degree they could--to help upbuild them and provide benefactions to them. In this sense, the book bridges eschatology and ethics, as it becomes easier to understand how, by seeking the welfare of the cities and towns in which they live, Christians witness to the sovereignty and goodness of God over all the creation. When secular rulers acknowledge the benefaction of Christians, these same rulers witness to the lordship of Christ, even as they may remain unware of it.

I also highly recommend After Paul Left Corinth.

Thoughtful and informed  Apr 7, 2006
Winter is well-known for his long years of careful study in this field. Consistent with Rodney Stark's more popular work, Winter strengthens the argument that from very early on the Christian movement included well-placed and well-heeled members of society and adds his own strong case that far from abandoning the city they were encouraged to contribute to its well-being. An important, well-crafted, and carefully argued book. Highly recommended.

Extremely Insightful  May 9, 2000
Having studied under Bruce Winter for over a year, I can say with great confidence that few match his zeal for matching scholarly work with pastoral application. This book clearly outlines the historical contexts of key passages that in term help one to know the Word of God and preach the Word of God with effectiveness. One can only appreciate Winter's tremendous efforts in this text.

Implausible exegesis  Sep 14, 1998
This is an eclectic collection of essays which attempts to argue that from its birth Christianity included amongst its members individuals who were socially powerful and played prominent roles in the cities which they inhabited. This is an interesting thesis and one pushed by many of the "Tyndale School" based in England, of which the author is the chief figure. However, the exegesis pursued by the author is often strained and his knowledge of the Graeco-Roman world which the Christians inhabited is woefully inadequate. Consequently the thesis is implausible. It seems to owe more to wishful thinking on the part of the author and his sponsors.
