Book Review - Seeing Through the Lies: Unmasking the Myths Women Believe  Sep 29, 2009
Women disheartened by what American culture classifies as a modern women will enjoy Vonda Skelton's Seeing Through the Lies: Unmasking the Myths Women Believe. You will not find a feminist view in this book. What you will find is simple truth. For those of us who are seeking truth, you will not be disappointed.

In these eleven chapters, each focusing on a different grouping of lies and deceptions, I found humor, quotes, research study results, personal illustrations, and most importantly what God has to say about women. The focus is far different that what you would find in popular womens magazines.

Vonda Skelton first establishes that the notion of the superwomen is simply unattainable and is the result of deceptive advertising, bad tradition taught from mother to daughter, and perhaps some inner desire to have and do it all. She then moves on to describe how God sees women, quite a different picture.

Should I be asked to pick just one quote from this book to include in this review, I would choose what she states about the central most unique aspect of a woman's life, motherhood. About motherhood, she states

"The world tries to rob us of the joy of motherhood by questioning its worth. Feminist tell us we can change the world, but they say we can't change it if we're bogged down in changing diapers. the culture glories the satisfaction in outside employment and diminishes the significance of mothering".

As a christian woman, I was encouraged and enlightened. The ideas and perceptions that women have today about their marriages, their families, and their personal struggles leave them feeling inadequate, which is the objection of a lie and deception.

The truth proclaimed in this book is that God loves us and created us to enjoy our lives, our children and our marriages without the heavy burden of having to do it all.

The many years of bible study, writing and speaking are quite evident throughout the book. I found the personal stories of her life very entertaining. The scripture references she includes are quite concise. She offers very wise counsel to today's woman.

Each chapter ends with a scripture reference. The book ends with a discussion guide, quite appropriate for a book club or bible study. I would consider this book to be a recommended resource for any woman's library, one to keep on hand and refer back to from time to time.

Had me laughing out loud while convicting my heart  Jul 14, 2009
Women's struggle with self-image is about as old as the original sin in the garden of eden. Vonda Skelton tackles head on the lies and half-truths many women believe. Vonda will lead you through real life stories while discussing such topics as busyness, materialism, motherhood, and true beauty.

Most of the time she had me laughing out loud while convicting my heart. Each chapter talks about a different Lie along with a section on Unmasking with truths backed up with Bible references. Throughout the book she has wonderful quotes that will have you laughing. This book will find a permanent place on my bookshelf.

This would make a perfect bible study or a stand along devotional. You can read chapter one here.
Truth? Lie? How can I tell?  May 4, 2009
What a wonderful addition to any home or church library! As women we have been tugged in so many different directions and Vonda Skelton has a very skillful way of solidly grounding us in the TRUTH. This book will make you laugh, but more importantly it will make you search the Scriptures. With chapter titles such as "I'm So Proud of my Humility" and "Choices: Change the World or Change the Diapers", you have the opportunity for some soul searching in every facet of a woman's life. Truly, "Most of us lead complex, materialistic, blessed-beyond-measure lives." We simply don't have time to invest in lies any longer.

I love the in-depth study that is included with each chapter. This would be an awesome small-group study or simply a personal study. Vonda has written the book to cover a 12-week or 6-week study.

Aren't you ready to unmask the myths that have mislead us? This is the place to start!
Read this book and be blessed  Jan 21, 2009
I met this lovely dynamo of a woman at the Writers Conference in the Blue Ridge Mountains, May 2008. Like a magnet those of us at the conference were drawn into her enthusiasm. As I read this book I could "see" Vonda moving and feel her energy coming through the words.
As Vonda says: A half truth is a whole lie. And that is how the devil gets us, with half-truths.
Vodna led me through ten chapters, teaching me that it's not how beautiful I am, nor how much stuff I manage to accumulate but learning to trust in Him.
I will never be good enough. That is true. But I don't have to be. Jesus Christ has said He is the way the truth and the life. He wants me to submit to him and to His will for my life.
"Our past failure does not have to affect our future calling." ~~ Vonda Skelton
Read Seeing Through the Lies and be blessed. Review  Jan 8, 2009
The opening chapter of this book is so winsome that within the first four pages I was hooked. Skelton discusses such topics as busyness, materialism, motherhood, and true beauty. She handles these issues with humility and grace, offering sage advice and biblical instruction.

The day I began reading "Seeing Through the Lies" just happened to be my daughter's first day of public high school. I was struggling with feelings of inadequacy, and I found myself wondering if I had done all I could to prepare her for what was ahead. The timing couldn't have been more perfect for me to read this book! It helped me to identify the lies I had been believing about my "mothering abilities," and helped me to put my confidence firmly in God's adequacy--not my own. "Seeing Through the Lies" reminds readers of the absolute worth and importance of motherhood.

In Chapter 8 Skelton writes, The world tries to rob us of the joy of motherhood by questioning its worth. Feminists tell us we can change the world, but they say we can't change it if we're bogged down in changing diapers. The culture glorifies the satisfaction in outside employment and diminishes the significance of mothering.

Another favorite part of "Seeing Through the Lies" is the laugh-out-loud chapter called "Beauty and the Book." Written in Skelton's self effacing style, she teaches women the Biblical standard for "inward beauty."

"Seeing Through the Lies" is a delightfully encouraging read, and a useful tool to help women unmask the myths that may be holding them back from living a fulfilling, Christ-centered life.
