A CBA BestsellerWinner of the Christy Award

The old villa needed what Rese Barrett could do as well as any man on the crew. Trained by the best, she had honed her skills with a passion for quality, an eye for detail, and no room for compromise. Renovation was her joy. But this time the inn she restored was hers, and this time she worked alone . . . until chef, musician, and spellbinder Lance Michelli talked his way into her plans and had Rese telling secrets she'd never before revealed.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
a sixty year-old, ornery man loves this book.  Jan 12, 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The characters, the plot, and the vein of goodness threading its way through the story blessed me. Thank you!
well-woven deception  Mar 14, 2007
I loved the idea behind this story: a young man seeks employment at a Bed and Breakfast as a cook because he believes the property belongs to his family. His employer is the B&B's new owner, Reese, who is a talented carpenter, and renovating the place, herself. Many charming elements enrich this book: the Bed and Breakfast location, the ethnic foods, Lance's chivalrous attitude and devotion to his family. The mystery of how the Michelli's lost the property is told cleverly in exciting flashbacks.

Although I enjoyed the book overall, there was something about it that didn't quite gel. Reese's character was very shallow at times. She definitely wasn't as well developed as Lance. But even with its quirks, Secrets is a well told story.
I LOVED THIS BOOK!  Jul 25, 2006
I haven't read such a good and fun book like this one in a long time! The story contains mystery, intrigue, romance, betrayal, humor, etc., and you can really get into the characters and their emotions. I can't wait to read the sequel, "Unforgotten!"

Great job, Kristen!
Beautiful, Character-Driven Love Story  Jul 17, 2006
This was the second book I tackled by Kristen Heitzmann, & it was worth every hour.

Rese & Lance are polar opposites. She's a do-it-herself craftsman who's never truly expressed any emotion she's ever had. He's an artistic jack-of-all-trades who's lived his life in the shadow of his older brother & never finished anything he started. Oh, & he has an earring. As if their clashing personalities are not enough, Lance is a Christian while Rese observes God & the Bible as mere fairytale.

On a mission from his grandmother, Lance unexpectedly finds himself working for Rese as she restores a beautiful old house into a charming bed & breakfast. Little does she know that the house in which she has invested all of her finances was actually built by, & may still belong to, Lance's family. The two form an odd friendship, eventually moving beyond the obvious reasons why they should dislike each other. But as Lance digs further into his family's history while failing to make Rese aware of his true intentions, love begins to grow within both. Can it survive once the truth erupts?

Thought-provoking, at times heart-wrenching, this book keeps moving. I am amazed at Mrs. Heitzmann's ability to create realistic characters who survive all-to-real situations. This story saunters along at such an easy, natural pace, I quickly lost track of time & finished it in only a few hours. The thoughts, feelings, reactions, & speech of each character are easy to understand, especially when considering the challenges each face. The only thing I found a bit distracting was the continued references to "terrorists", which is today's buzzword much like "communists" was in the '50's.

I laughed, I cried, & then I clasped my hands & said, 'Ahhh...' Sweet, refreshing, & intriguing. If you love romances, Kristen Heitzmann, or both, you will love this book. And don't worry...there's a sequel.
Why I loved "Secrets"  Nov 18, 2005
From the opening scene in a tense hospital room, with the wonderful line "Lance breathed in the faith of his family and exhaled his own," a spirituality so embedded as to simply be the essential personality of the hero scents the air of this story. As with the protagonist, the spirituality of the novel is so deeply embedded in the text that the book never preaches, never drags through a carelessly-dropped-in sermon that stops the action. Ms. Heitzmann has achieved an unusual level of naturalness and realism in the interweaving of character and theme, an integration of a novelist's art and minister's heart to a degree that is uncommon in the marketplace of inspirational fiction. It is no Secret why this book won the 2005 Christy Award.

Faith is not just a "Sunday go to meetin'" activity for Lance Michelli; it is his entire modus operandi. He so earnestly chases God, seeking to find his place in the divine will. Lance's faith is expressed not only in the way he makes his major life choices, but more fundamentally in his interactions with the other characters who populate the book--especially with heroine Rese, to whom such a way of living is utterly foreign and incomprehensible.

This is not simply a novel about a relationship that becomes romantic; the novel is relationships. Even so, the pace never drags--one is swept up into the utter life of the tale. As the story unfolds, the centrality of relationship is described in all its facets: friendly, familial, generational, as well as romantic relationships all have threads woven into the deeply-textured tapestry of this novel. Lance, in his role as "chef" at Rese's bed-and-breakfast, explains to Rese the significance of sharing meals with people, describing that act as "connection, acceptance, relationship." The farther one progresses in the story, the more completely the reader knows that he in not just talking about sharing food, but life itself. The importance of relationship to spiritual life is beautifully captured, later in the book, in the unforgettable line: "There is a God, Rese. And there is evil. And nobody stands alone before either."

The question, of course, is whether Rese and Lance actually can stand together, in the face of the secrets and deceptions that lie between them. Sin and error have consequences, even for the faithful who strive to find the will of God; it remains to be seen whether Lance and Rese can overcome those consequences, whether their relationship is indeed what God has planned for Lance...[there is a sequel to this book!]
