Lucie McNeil's quiet life as a companion to an elderly couple on Nantucket Island was a blessing for the tragedy-haunted Irish immigrant. Reviews - What do our customers think?
Great book, enjoyed it to the end.  Feb 11, 2010
Love the book, Anna Schmidt did a lovely job of pulling the story line together, would definitely read more of her books. I just finished it and knew I couldn't go to bed until I did.
It makes you want to live in the time period 1800s even though life was hard, it shows that kindness, love, peace and contentment can still be had in the worst of times. Integrity, honor are still important what ever the century.
Lovely !!!  Oct 3, 2009
I loved this romance! It was so sweet and inspiring! I couldn't put it down!
Seaside Romance  Jan 5, 2009
I read the other reviews, and was hesitant about starting this book, but, I was glad I did. I really think the main characters were not as interesting as Emma and Johnathan, Gabe's parents. I really found them, and THEIR love story to be just precious! The story itself was fine, and I did not feel "bogged-down" by it, I was just wishing that I could have also been captivated by Lucie and Gabe!I did enjoy the Nantucket setting, but would have enjoyed a little more locale description...I.E.: The sounds and smells of the ocean, the lonely cry of the gulls, the full moon casting its eerie glow on the Atlantic below....Just a thought. Nantucket is a truly beautiful spot!
Okay but become harder to read as it went on  Aug 8, 2008
At first, I thought that the book had potential but as it went on (and on and on), I grew tired of the characters. The author kind of "tacked on" God in the latter part of the book. You didn't see much of the day to day issues that Christian face and deal with through prayer. In fact, the only prayer I recall from earlier in the book was when the heroine prayed that God wouldn't let her "fall" from grace and have sex with the hero outside of marriage.

It would have been nice to see the Christians speak to the non-Christians about God's healing powers and salvation but that seemed far from what the author had in mind. In fact, the only salvation happens aways from the actual book when the hero turns to a minister and they depart for a chat. It would have been much better to put this scene into the book as a witness to those who were reading it.

BTW, it is quite a stretch to believe that a young Irish immigrant of this period would not have been Catholic.

Way too many things were flung at the reader without warning for me to recommend the book. The author seemed to put present day situations into the past and would have done well to have studied historical data a little better.

Also, we are teased with the next book in the series (ad at the back of the book.) By my reckoning, the year is already late summer 1900 (parents married after the end of Civil War - 1865 and have been married for 35 years - hence 1900). The teaser says that the hero/heroine's daughter is in the throes of World War I. As World War I was from 1914 to 1918 - the throes implies about halfway through - that would be around 1916. The absolutely earliest hero/heroine could have a child would be 1901 (given the date of their marriage) - so the daughter is what? 15 years old in the next book? At most 17 years old. Not the age of a heroine I wish to read about.
Nice story and fun "visit" to the ocean and the 1800's  Jul 16, 2008
A good story with some interesting characters and a fun seaside environment. I gave it four stars because the story became a little weighed down and seemed to loose the plot. The last half of the book was a bit of a let down. The reasons for Gabe, the main lead, becoming engaged to another woman was poorly done and out of character. This is a main character who was clearly strong willed and decisive and all the sudden he can't break the engagement he made. He has to wait for the woman he is engaged to (but not in love with) to be the one to break it off???

Beyond that frustration, it really was a nice story, the older couples' love story is wonderful and worth the time, overall a great relaxing visit to the past.
