Item Description...
Have evangelicals at large missed out on the reality of the Spirit's power? Are all the miraculous gifts of the New Testament era fully operational today? Numerous writers and speakers from Pentecostal, charismatic, and "signs and wonders" groups maintain that such is the case, that Christians who do not seek and practice such gifts have settled for less in the spiritual life. In response to those who profess to have been "surprised" by the reality of charismatic gifts, Dr. Thomas R. Edgar provides a consistent examination of the primary biblical texts used in the current debate over spiritual gifts and the charismatic experience. Dr. Edgar affirms that believers can indeed be satisfied and fulfilled by the Spirit apart from miraculous gifts. *In addressing the positions taken by authors such as Jack Deere in his book Surprised by the Power of the *Spirit, Dr. Edgar answers a number of perplexing questions, such as *Did miraculous gifts cease because the early church stopped believing in them? *Is a lack of experience the real reason that most Christians disbelieve in charismatic gifts? *Should believers "covet" or seek spiritual gifts? *Was Jesus limited in his ability to heal? *Is there such a thing as "lesser" gifts of prophecy and healing? *Were there two kinds of speaking in tongues in the New Testament era? *Do modern cessationists simply lack faith in God? *Is the promised Holy Spirit sufficient to satisfy every need for godly living?

What do you trust?  Apr 22, 2008
In a day when just about any experience is justified if one says it is of God, it is refreshing to have Dr. Edgar's call to put biblical teaching first and then use that to determine if an experience is biblical or not. This is a great work for anyone wanting to use the Bible as their guide to discerning if an "experience" is from God or not. If the goal is to only allow in ones life what is of God, this book is a must.

Your God is too small  May 16, 2007
My grandfather was healed of stomach cancer on his deathbed. It was in the 1950s; he was nothing but bones and tumors, doped up on morphine. His wife was told to start planning the funeral because my grandfather would never again leave the hospital alive. She went home and spent days fasting and praying for my grandfather. The church prayed around his bed one night around 10 p.m. The pain subsided and he fell asleep. In the morning he awoke to found his stomach flat again. He felt fine. He got up, found his clothes, dressed and started to leave the hospital. The nurses, amazed, asked him where he was going. He replied, "I'm going home, God healed me..."

As a pastor, my grandfather prayed for the sick and saw people miraculously healed throughout his years.

My own father is a testimony as well: 3rd degree burns over his entire body. They told my mother he would would eventually die; when he recovered, she was told he would never work again because he would never be able to move his arms again. He went back to work in construction with full use of every limb and supported his family until he retired.

My grandfather always said that he would die someday, but not of cancer. In 1998, he died of complications of a stroke. He was 93.

I'm not a theologian. All I have is my testimony, and no one can take that away from me.

Consider Heb 11:6. God has always healed, and He still heals today.
Extremely good analysis  Mar 6, 2007
This book is a must have for all Christians who are willing to test what they believe against scripture. I have Jack Deere's book and I found this one by Edgar sufficiently answered most if not all, my questions. This book has a crucial analysis of Corinthians 14 that could easily be read wrongly if we were not aware of the times in which it was written. In every aspect Edgar goes through all of the main issues from experience, the nature of scripture, biblical information of gifts, apostles and prophets, gifts of miracles and healings, the nature of tongues, the purpose of tongues, the gifts in history, and lastly, cessation of gifts. An absolute MUST have for every Christian!
Excellent  Mar 11, 2006
This book is an excellent discussion and study of the New Testament gifts, specifically prophecy, tongues, healing and miracles. Edgar studies and discusses each one in an honest, but definitive way that will be instructive and helpful to any true student of the Bible. He bases everything primarily on Scriptre and it's ultimate authority. This emphasis is a needed one in the ongoing debate and discussion of spiritual gifts of the holy spirit. Every Christian ought to have this book as required reading.
The Flip Side of Jack Deere's Arguments  May 17, 2004
Dr. Thomas Edgar's book offers another view as opposed to the best selling and popular book by Dr. Jack Deere, SURPRISED BY THE SPIRIT. In Dr. Edgar's book he seeks to give a biblical view of Deere's book and then offer a biblical view of the Holy Spirit working from a cessation point of view.

For those who have not read Jack Deere's book, I would highly recommend that you do before reading Thomas Edgar's book. Be willing to examine both views and allow the Bible to speak for itself. You might find that you agree with both on some points and disagree with both on others. Both books seek to glorify God and both claim the Bible as their sole authority. However, who is right? You read and make that decision.
