Saints of the Bible: Exploring Scripture with Holy Men and Women  Apr 25, 2010
Wow! That is a really great book! Every entry of the 48 saints listed in this book {listed in order of their feast days} is followed by a group of Bible verses that you can learn more about the saint in. Every entry is very descriptive and tells about the saint's lives and works in faith. I learned something about every saint listed in this book. I loved this book and would definitely recommend that you read it.

Help for Eastern and Western Catholics  Nov 30, 2009
Saints of the Bible: Exploring Scripture With Holy Men and Women

The various saints in this neat little book contain names that a lot of Roman Catholics won't immediately pick up on, like Jason or Apphia. For Eastern Catholics and Orthodox, here are the various saints of our Church Year who knew Christ on earth, or who were co-workers of St Paul come alive; the archangels and their interventions on earth; and connection of both saints and angels with us on earth through their heavenly intercession on behalf of us by listing the "intentions" attributed to some of them as prayer partners, e.g. against convulsions or headaches, for mothers and paratroopers: a diverse selection!

Eastern Christians venerate a lot of these saints on the church calendar without really knowing who they were, or we see their icons on the iconostas or on an analogion and wonder "what did he do?" or "how does she fit into the economy of salvation"? Now you can find out easily.

The writer lives in the hill country of Texas, an area settled by German and Polish Catholics 150 years ago. A companion book is said to be in the works, to cover more figures. That could only be a welcome event, hopefully to present a lot of the Old Testament saints, especially the prophets.

This book comes in a handy size for briefcase or backpack. Roman Catholics would find it handy to use during an adoration visit to start up an acquaintance with some of these people who knew Our Lord or worked with St Paul in his evangelization of the Gentiles. It is a good way to bring biblical figures to life and to lead readers back into that one book we never seem to open enough, the Bible.

Great Resource!  Nov 24, 2009
Do you have a student preparing for Confirmation this year? Are you struggling with intercessory prayer and looking for a new "heavenly friend" with whom you can share your quiet time? Do you love the Bible and want to know more about the holy men and women who fill its pages?

If you've answered any of these questions in the affirmative, let me recommend a terrific resource for you and your family. Saints of the Bible: Exploring Scripture With Holy Men and Women (Our Sunday Visitor, March 2009) was written by Theresa Doyle-Nelson, a Texas Catholic mom of three, former teacher and freelance writer.

I'm lucky enough to own many great books on the lives of the saints, but Theresa's take on sharing these heroic men and women was different enough to grab my attention. In her introduction, Theresa talks about her hope to write a book that would combine her joint loves of saints and scripture. I'd say she's succeeded! The book is organized in chronological fashion, beginning with a chapter dedicated to the Blessed Mother on January 1 and concluding with the Holy Innocents on December 28. In between, you'll find the lives of 48 "biblical personalities" chronicled. Each chapter includes quotes from scripture about the life of the saint being profiled and additional bible references to help you dive more deeply into both the bible and the saint. A quick and handy chart at the back of the book combines all of the information into an easy reference guide. On her website, Therese also provides free, downloadable activities for you to use with your family, homeschooling group, Confirmation kids or religious education class.

As we've discussed, many teens these days put very little time or preparation into the choosing of their Confirmation saint. It would be wonderful to help our teens realize that this relationship with their lifelong patron saint can be much more than a one-time-only ceremonial moniker. Why not help the special kids in your life, and yourself, easily do a little saint and scripture study to learn more about some of the well and lesser known lives of Jesus' New Testament companions and those Early Christians who built our Church? If St. Phoebe or St. Apphia are not yet on your radar, check out Saints of the Bible: Exploring Scripture With Holy Men and Women and discover a few new favorites to accompany you in your spiritual walk. This would make a terrific Advent present for you or the special teen in your life.

INSPIRATION READING  Nov 14, 2009
My husband and I are the parents of two small children & I also work part-time outside of our home. I try to take as much time as possible to read to my little ones but often run out of time and energy for reading for myself. Several months ago someone gave me the book "Saints of the Bible" by Theresa Doyle Nelson. It was a wonderful gift for me. Often I will pick it up and just read one page at a time. Just that one page inspires me & leaves me with good holy thoughts. I would recommend this book for all, especially those with very busy lives but still feel the need for some inspirational reading. Enjoy, Jennifer Green

Saints of the Bible  Nov 1, 2009
I am a convert to the Catholic faith, and the few months spent in preparation for the Rite of Christian Initiation did not include much about the lives of the saints. So, when I was asked to choose a patron saint for my Confirmation, the Saints of the Bible were the ones with whom I was most familiar.

I had always been taught in the Protestant denominations whose services I attended that the Word of God was Sola Scriptura, but I have learned through the Catholic faith that the lives of the saints testify to God's goodness and mercy just as much as Scripture does. Without the Church tradition we would lose much of the richness of these saints' stories as the Bible mentions many of their names only briefly. Theresa Doyle-Nelson, in her book Saints of the Bible has combined the scriptural evidence with the stories passed down for nearly two millennia by the traditions of the Catholic Church. She reminds us that each of these characters, with roles important enough to be mentioned alongside the life of Christ, has a rich tale of conversion and each exemplifies a life that was changed by their deep faith in Jesus. They give us hope that as Jesus enters our lives, we can be similarly changed.

Doyle-Nelson gives common ground to those who believe that Scripture is the sole source of authority and those of us who draw from the deposit of faith passed to us from the Apostles. We can all agree that these saints' tales of conversion, witness, and sacrifice are examples to us all.

Doyle-Nelson's book is a concise, well-organized reference that is straight-forward enough for beginner students of the saints, but informative enough that even more experienced students of Scripture and the lives of the saints will find some surprises. It is conveniently organized by date, so you can easily reference it all year long as you study Scripture alongside these "holy men and women".

I would definitely recommend buying this book for adult Catechumens and Candidates, as well as high-school youth in preparation for Confirmation. It may even be a nice gift for Protestant friends who have questions about Catholicism and its teaching and traditions.

I was especially touched by the last entry in the book which describes the slaughter of the Holy Innocents by King Herod the Great. It resonates deeply with the current issue of abortion in our country and in our world today.
