Item Description...
"Progress toward God is indicated much more by actual choices than by pious feelings." -From Chapter One Anyone can achieve a reasonable level of sanctity, but the saints are in a league of their own. What sets them apart? Does holiness come more naturally to them than to the rest of us? Do they endure severe temptation? How do grievous sinners become saints? How has history been influenced by the saints? Are the saints relevant today? What do they mean for you? In answering these questions and many more, Father Thomas Dubay not only reveals what makes the saints tick, but also nudges readers toward the heights of sanctity themselves. It's an uphill battle for everyone, but the lives of the saints make it clear that great holiness is possible for all if we allow ourselves, as they do, to fall radically in love with God.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Okay but...  May 15, 2008
I bought this book thinking that Dubay would expand on his thoughts from other books but that is not what this book is. It is merely a repetition of those thoughts. My advise is: save your money and buy Fire Within or his book on spiritual direction. You will get the same material in either of those books plus additional thoughts that are very helpful to the journey of faith.
Abiding Love of the Church  Feb 16, 2008
Father Dubay, author, retreat master and spiritual director, draws on Scripture and the lives and writings of numerous saints to explore such questions as what makes saints better than 99 percent of the rest of us, why saints are joyful even in suffering, and how sinners become saints. He acknowledges that the likes of Augustine, John Henry Newman, Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Avila, and Peter Claver are extraordinary heroes and heroines, yet repeatedly spells out ways in which we can imitate them and perhaps achieve our own "unspeakably enthralling destiny in the resurrection and the beatific vision." Knowing what the saints are like, he writes, helps us live the gospel fully and find solutions to concrete problems of daily living.

Two major themes in the book are the saints' serious and habitual meditative prayer life and their abiding love of the Church and strict compliance with her teachings. "The saints live the Church's teachings and her life to the hilt," he writes. Another theme is their unwavering dedication to overcoming even venial sins and simple faults. Time and again, in various contexts, Dubay lists these defects as manifested in our culture, for example:

* excessive desire for esteem
* gossiping, grouchiness, quarreling, and impatience
* laziness and procrastination
* overeating
* petty vanities
* small dishonesties
* wasting time through idle chatter or excessive amusements
* omissions of all sorts (a smile, a word of commendation, a helping hand)

In light of the critically precarious circumstances of our modern world, Dubay offers the saints as models for overcoming evil with good. "What we need in our deeply troubled world, he writes, "is to have farmers and day laborers, professionals of all sorts, legislators, judges and heads of state come closer and closer to imitating the men and women we celebrate in this volume."
