Item Description...
The Revised Standard Version is a comprehensive revision of the 1611 King James Version of 1611 and its successors, the Revised Version and American Standard Version. It is a scholarly and accurate translation, highly regarded as a reliable text for academic use, as well as lending itself well to public reading and private devotions. It does not aim for the latest contemporary idiom: rather, it seeks to preserve all that is best in the English Bible as it has been known and used through the centuries. Despite the plethora of new Bible translations over the last twenty years, the RSV remains popular and is often asked for. This edition is bound in French Morocco leather and comes in a gift slipcase. The Bible text is complemented by cross-references, translators' notes and pronunciation marks for names and places. It is the only leather RSV reference Bible available in the UK (other than our own Study Edition, 0 521 51151).

Book Description
The enduring RSV translation in a smart leather binding. Offers translators' notes, cross-references, concordance and pronunication marks. Bound in French Morocco leather.

More About Baker Publishing Group

Baker Publishing Group Baker Publishing Group is an Evangelical Christian book publisher based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It has six main divisions: Bethany House, Revell, Baker Books, Baker Academic, Chosen and Brazos Press.

The company was founded in 1939, by Herman Baker. The company has published of Christian books that discuss many issues, from family life to theology, within a broadly evangelical framework. Baker publishes books and ministry resources for pastors and church leaders, concentrating on topics such as preaching, worship, pastoral ministries, counseling and leadership. Baker also publishes for lay Christians on topics such as discipleship, spirituality, encouragement, relationships, marriage, parenting and the intersection of Christianity and culture.

Bethany House - has been publishing high quality books for more than 50 years, and has over 1,100 titles spanning nearly every reading category. Recognized as the pioneer and leader in Christian fiction, we publish many of the top names in historical and contemporary romance, Amish and Mennonite fiction, romantic suspense, and many other fiction subgenres. Our nonfiction encompasses a variety of subjects, including Christian living, family resources, theology, heaven, and many more. Offering inspiration and encouragement to readers through story and spiritual insight, Bethany House titles frequently appear on Christian bestseller lists.

Revell - began over 125 years ago when D. L. Moody and his brother-in-law Fleming H. Revell saw the need for practical books that would help bring the Christian faith to everyday life. From there, Fleming H. Revell Publishing developed consistently solid lists that included many notable Christian writers over the years. This same vision for books that are both inspirational and practical continues to motivate the Revell publishing group today. Whether publishing fiction, Christian living, self-help, marriage, family, or youth books, each Revell publication reflects relevance, integrity, and excellence.

Baker Books - has a vision for building up the body of Christ through books that are relevant, intelligent, and engaging. We publish titles for lay Christians on topics such as discipleship, spirituality, encouragement, relationships, marriage, parenting, and the intersection of Christianity and culture. We also publish books and ministry resources for pastors and church leaders, concentrating on topics such as preaching, worship, pastoral ministries, counseling, and leadership.

Baker Academic - serves the academy and the church by publishing works that further the pursuit of knowledge and understanding within the context of Christian faith. Building on our Reformed and evangelical heritage, we connect authors and readers across the broader academic community by publishing books that reflect historic Christianity and its contemporary expressions. Our authors are scholars who are leaders in their fields, write irenically, and display a healthy respect for other perspectives and traditions. Our goal is to publish books that are notable for their inherent quality and deemed essential reading by students and scholars.

Ever since the 1971 publication of The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom, Chosen Books has been publishing powerful books that help millions to live the Spirit-filled life. Attracting evangelicals and charismatics, professionals and laypersons, books published by Chosen help believers to better know and love the Lord Jesus Christ, to pray about the concerns that are on God's heart, to be empowered by his Spirit for ministry, to fulfill the Great Commission, and to transform their communities and their world. Several hundred titles over more than thirty years, from Charles Colson's Born Again to Cindy Jacobs' Possessing the Gates of the Enemy, reflect the publishing goal of Chosen Books: to publish well-crafted books that recognize the gifts and ministry of the Holy Spirit and help readers live more empowered and effective lives for Jesus Christ. Challenged by the written word, these hungry readers are joining the incredible adventure of what God is doing in the world.

Brazos Press - fosters the renewal of classical, orthodox Christianity by publishing thoughtful, theologically grounded books on subjects of importance to the church and the world. We serve authors and readers from all major streams of the historic Christian tradition, recognizing that the renewal of Christian orthodoxy transcends many traditional boundary lines and polarities.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Burgundy RSV Bible no longer offered  Sep 5, 2007
I contacted Cambridge University Press this afternoon. Apparently, they no longer offer the burgundy french morocco RSV Bible for sale. The CSR for Cambridge stated the volume was taken off the catalog as of June 2007. A shame since I would have liked one of those. I'll still purchase the Black French Morocco. They look to be of high quality and Cambridge has fixed the page problem.
An old favorite in a beautiful edition  Jul 25, 2007
For many of us who grew up in one of the liturgical churches (Lutheran, in my case) during the 1950s, 60s or 70s, the Revised Standard Version remains the Scripture translation of choice. It was the text used in our public worship, as well as in our Sunday School and Confirmation Classes. It was also the Bible version that our professors recommended for our college courses in theology. Despite its alleged shortcomings, and the raft of more recent translations that have supposedly eclipsed it, the RSV is still regarded as a classic by those who appreciate its faithfulness to the original Greek and Hebrew, its beautiful cadences and its elevated style. It allows one to read the Scriptures without being distracted by the Orwellian gender-inclusive language of the NRSV or the dreary near-paraphrase of the NIV. Even the ESV, its closest relative among contemporary translations, cannot match its elegance. This particular edition is a joy to use. It is beautifully bound in French morocco leather and features easily readable typeface both in the text itself and in the center-column references. The concordance is quite extensive, and the maps, while not numerous, are indexed in a gazetteer. This is a perfect edition for one's personal devotions or for use while traveling, since it is relatively small and can be held easily in one hand. All in all, a lovely Bible at a great price.
My high hopes are dampered.  Jan 9, 2007
I absolutely love both Cambridge Bibles (I own approximately ten of them) as well as this particular edition of the RSV text. I read several of the previous reviews, a bit aghast that my beloved Cambridge University Press would sell defective or repaired bibles. I didn't want to believe it. Perhaps this site got a bum I ordered mine from another on-line Bible dealer. Bottom line: I TOO RECEIVED A REPAIRED COPY OF THIS TEXT. It is very evident that in the New Testament, page 95/96 was glued into the bible. I have never experienced this problem with any previous Cambridge purchases and am sorely disappointed. Cambridge Bibles are not cheap. I buy them because of their high quality and therefore do not mind spending more for a high-quality product. I am truly sad that this publisher would sell second-rate products that have been repaired. I want to trust Cambridge because I love their bibles, but this was a disappointment.
Quality RSV Bible  Oct 14, 2006
I did not know about Cambridge Bibles until about two years ago, and now I have three. I already have the KJV and NIV Pitt Minion editions and recently decided to purchase the RSV. I attend a Presbyterian Church that uses the NRSV, but I feel that the use of gender-inclusive language has gone overboard. I was pleased to find that Cambridge offers the traditional Revised Standard Version, which is not often used today. The quality of this Bible is top-notch. The French Morocco leather is nice and supple. The print size is large and there is a comprehensive concordance and several nice maps in the back. I don't think there are many RSV Protestant Bibles left on the market, and still fewer genuine leather editions. If you are looking for one of the last RSV Bibles in the Tyndale KJV tradition, look no further than the Cambridge Brevier edition. You'll be glad you got it.
Wonderful little RSV Bible  Mar 27, 2006
I love the RSV, and it is nice to still have it available in a cross-reference edition! I have two of these RSV Bibles: burgundy and black french morocco leathers. The only glaring difference is that the burgundy edition does not contain maps while the black edition does. My black edition does have the 95-96 page correction inserted, but this is no big deal, and I might have never noticed it! As for page 51, I'm not quite sure about the problem there.
This is a wonderful, small sized Bible that would be great for church! The only problem is that so few churches still use the RSV. But the cross references are great, and the RSV is in the line of essentially literal translations.
It's great!!
