Reviews - What do our customers think?
It is a lovely book  Jan 20, 2010
This is a beautifully illustrated book. Each page is covered with realistic pictures and the text is boxed. The children in the story look like they're about third grade level. It's nice that the people in the book, while very clean and neat, are rather ordinary looking with the kind of faces you see in real life. It's a sweet reassuring story with no unpleasantness that accurately portrays how sensitive our emotions can be. It's about a young girl whose family moves from France back to America. Danae feels homesick and out of place. She misses the things she saw every day in France like roses climbing walls. She has to stand up in front of the class on her first day at school and talk about herself. She embarrasses herself why explaining her father's pet name for her means 'my little cabbage' in French and the other children laugh at her. One thing I really like about it is the little portraits of the kids in class, particularly the ones that show the girls giggling and whispering to each other. It really shows why Danae feels isolated from her new classmates. Danae is so embarrassed she doesn't remember her new classmate's names. They're Blonde Braid, Plaid Skirt, Pencil Boy and Chocolate Eyes to her. She tells her father at supper the first day was hard. The supper scene is particularly good for gently reminding parents that children often don't know how to tell you what is really going in their lives. Danae's dad says, "Look for roses, not thorns." Danae doesn't know what that means. She looks for roses along her street on her way to school. There are other flowers, but no roses. The second day at school is better than the first. Afterward, Danae finds a girl named Katie in her class lives on the same street and is invited over to her house. In the basement, they find Katie's mother working, making beautiful ribbon roses. Danae has found her roses. It's a sweet reassuring story with no unpleasantness that accurately portrays sensitive emotions.

There is a Christian element to the book, but it is not forced. It's just an added touch to the story. There's a bible verse on blackboard in the background on some pages, Danae tells her class her father is a pastor, and there's a picture of the family saying grace at the dinner table.

Cons: The clothing style in the illustrations are mildly dated, they look like some 80's styles: big hair bows, one girl's dress is made with blue panels in color block style, the teacher's side buttoned dress, the computer monitor in one picture is big and clunky. One picture shows a girl in a lavender dress with a big square lace collar: her face is the biggest flaw in the book. She's biting her lip and her face looks pinched and old. She's partially blocked by another girl standing front of her wearing a blue and yellow dress like Snow White's. One thing that is confusing is that on one page big sister is eating corn on the cob at the table, the next page has 'Mama asked me to help clear the table.' and 'sister' is on that page looking very tall and her face is too mature for a teenager's. Sister looks like Mama but Mama is the woman on the next page wearing the glasses and blue vest.
