Item Description...
As an evangelical speaker, pastor and author of the bestselling book Intercessory Prayer, Sheets has built a career on offering Christians disciplined methodology for gaining spiritual ground. Here, he delivers staunch followers another tool to add to their Christian armor. The author defines the Christian's spiritual journey through several steps: first, realizing the problem of besetting sins; second, recognizing the provision of Christ; and then implementing the process by which real and lasting change occurs. Sheets believes that Christians must know themselves and understand how the fickle part of their nature is content to remain defeated by failures and lusts, even while the other part sincerely longs for change. Believers have to recognize Satan as the enemy, Sheets says, and then lay hold of God's resources for spiritual victory as outlined in the book's handy five-step formula (believing in Christ's sacrificial work on the cross, abiding in God's word, knowing the truth, claiming release and spiritual freedom, and persevering until life's end). Sheets supplies a steady, if plodding and unoriginal, resource that loyal fans will embrace. (Feb.) Copyright (C) Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Roll Away Your Stone  Sep 30, 2008
best book ever, should be a classic for all Christians regardless of where you are in your walk with the Lord. Very easy and pleasant read!
Sheets sends an important message  May 21, 2008
Lazarus had been dead for days. He had lost the battle for his life, and his body was now cold and decomposing. That is, until the unthinkable actually happened. Jesus had the stone rolled away, and he called Lazarus out of that tomb. Now, it would have been really weird to see someone open a sealed tomb and call out to a dead person. But that's nothing compared to watching that dead person walk out of the tomb! Wow! That's a mind-bending reality!

This biblical story is at the heart of Christianity. When a man or woman becomes a follower of Jesus Christ, he or she is promised abundant life-both now and in a life to come. In Christ, believers are promised to be "more than conquers." Against this backdrop, author Dutch Sheets dares to voice the question, "If I am, then why don't I?" In other words, if I've been redeemed, reborn, and made new, then why can't I live like it? Why do I have fears, low self-worth, anger, addiction, etc? Many, many Christians find themselves totally discouraged by the "death" that they still experience. The stench of failure fills their nostrils until they wonder, "Did I ever receive that new life? Was it real?"

These questions are the fuel behind the fire for Roll Away Your Stone. Sheets does a great job of confronting these tough questions head-on. He uses scripture, often in its original language, to dive into an understanding of how we both are new and are becoming new. It's the "becoming" that's the difficult part to live out, and Sheets puts down blueprints for a successful "becoming."

Sheets is careful to assert that this is not a self-help book, and its readers will not find the stone rolled away when they close the book's back cover. Yet Sheets does propose a method of rolling that stone away. If that method is applied, Sheets gives a vision of actually living out that mind-bending reality-of walking out of every tomb that has ever held you back in life.

Armchair Interviews says: A book many Christians will find fascinating.
Be free indeed  Dec 25, 2007
I really enjoyed Dutch Sheets book "Roll Away Your Stone." Although, he covered material I have heard before, he did it in a new and fresh way. In the first section of the book "The Problem", Sheets makes a statement that I really liked, "God's wants to roll your stone away...He wants you just as free as Jesus is risen." One of the points Sheets made to go along with that was that, strongholds in our minds are often what keeps us from living the life of freedom God's wants for us. I appreciated that he didn't blame our strongholds purely on the demonic, but went into great detail about how strongholds are often formed based on what we believe to be the truth when it actually is not.

In the next section "The Provision", Sheets talks about how salvation in Christ is the answer to defeating strongholds, and our struggles with soul and body. He says, "Jesus is the way back to truth for our soul, and life for our spirit". Sheets explains how at the point of salvation our spirit was saved and our soul is still in the process of salvation. I have heard that many times before, but when he got into our fight with self will...well I think that is why God brought this book into my life. He has been speaking to me a lot about surrendering fully to him, so I found what Sheets said to be very convicting.

In the final section "The Process", Sheets talks about the process of salvation for our soul, and "being just as free as Christ is risen". He gives five steps: believe, abide in His Word, know the truth, be free, and be free indeed. Sheets emphasis' in each step the key is delving deep into God's Word. I personally love to study the Bible, but I found this last section to be very inspiring and made me have more of a hunger to spend time in God's Word, and press on to the freedom God wants for me.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone, especially new Christians.
Well worth reading, but falls short  Jul 11, 2007
Sheets' explanation of why Christians don't live up to their ideals, continually falling into less-than-exemplary behavior, is well worth reading for any Christian. He does a close examination of Biblical passages relating to the gradual growth to spiritual maturity and the Christian's role in this process. I found this part of the book to be the best. Sheets writes in an easy-to-read, accessible style and has important information to share.

On the other hand, he keeps the reader waiting until near the end of the book for any practical advice, which turns out to be 'abiding' in God's word, which primarily means selecting scriptural passages, reading them carefully, meditating on them, speaking them, and so on. In short, what is traditionally known as 'spiritual reading.' There's nothing wrong with this--it is a very good practice--but there are a variety of other spiritual practices that could have been added as well.

As a side note, I was rather flabbergasted in coming across this book and reading it because I cover a lot of the exact same ground in a book I recently published, but Sheets comes from evangelical Christianity and I come from the Christian contemplative tradition. I hope that means that our books confirm each other where they agree, and that Christians from all kinds of backgrounds and affiliations would profit from getting this information.

Aswesome Book!  May 17, 2007
This is the best explanation of all that resulted from Adam's fall, the significance of Jesus going to the cross, what salvation and living the abundant life really entails that I have read and I am an avid reader of Christian teaching.
This would be great book for every Christian and for small group study. I am hoping he will develop a study guide and DVD to accompany this.
