Item Description...
For Las Vegas widow Naomi, memories of a Pennsylvania Dutch childhood are an ache from the distant past, a painful memory of abandoned roots and lost connections. She has long since reconciled herself to the shattered dream of what had once enticed her from her heritage--a tiny apartment thick with loneliness and regret, the sad lives of her two sons, and her sole consolation: the friendship with daughter-in-law Ruth. But when hard living claims both of Naomi's boys, she and Ruth turn Naomi's creaky Impala eastward in a desperate last-chance bid for hope and meaning. Thus begins an adventure: a cross-country odyssey that brings Naomi home to her old farm in Lancaster Countyand to the values and rhythms of a life once spurned. Although never having seen the East before, Ruth finds a home here too, among the slow and authentic cadences of Pennsylvania farm country. Can two women from different backgrounds and generations, overwhelmed with life and loss, find healing for wounds once thought too deep to heal? Does life offer any real second choices and chances? Can modern paths, after leaving all that was good and true, ever truly lead home?

For Las Vegas widow Naomi, memories of a Pennsylvania Dutch childhood are an ache from the distant past, a painful memory of abandoned roots and lost connections. She has long since reconciled herself to the shattered dreams that had enticed her from her heritage and now simply lives in a tiny apartment, thick with loneliness and regret. Her sole consolation is her daughter-in-law Ruth. But when hard living claims both of her boys, the two women turn Naomi's creaky Impala eastward in a desperate, last-chance bid for hope and meaning. Thus begins a cross-country odyssey that brings her home to her old farm in Lancaster County--and to the values and rhythms of a life once spurned. Although the East is foreign territory, Ruth also finds a home here among the slow and authentic cadences of Pennsylvania farm country. And she finds love...

What's the Attraction?  Apr 9, 2008
What's the attraction for novels about people return to the legalistic religious heritages they grew up in? If it weren't that Tommy Tenney grew up in Oneness Pentecostalism, with its lifestyle similarities to the Mennonites, I would assume he was just one more person who idealized the that lifestyle. As is, I don't get the attraction for that, unless he would consider a return to his roots. The biblical story of Naomi leaving a pagan country to return to Israel is vastly different from an American returning to her Mennonite roots. Return to Christ--absolutely, but biblical freedom in Christ, not legalism, whether it be of the Mennonite, United Pentecostal, Independent Baptist, or any flavor.
Take a ride...  Mar 31, 2008
A fun, fantastik journey home. I loved reading this book and could not stop thinking about it when I put it down. Even now that I've finished, my mind is still consumed with the characters and places and events of the Road Home. I loved how applicable this book could be to any persons life. I would recommned this book for anyone struggling with thier journey to center themselves and finding balance. I would also reccommend and buy this book as a gift for any mothers, daughters and friends. This book is very uplifting and enlightening. I am grateful this book crossed my path.
Good book, interesting modern interpretation of the story of Ruth  Mar 5, 2008
A very interesting story of two women named Ruth and Naomi. Naomi has been widowed for a while and in the same day loses both her sons--one to a car accident, one to a terminal disease. The story hinges on the decision of her one daughter in law Ruth pledging never to leave her side, and they go on a cross country trek together in an old automobile. Naomi is from Pennsylvania Dutch country, and has decided to "go back to her people". And that is where Ruth meets Bo, Naomi's cousin...

Very entertaining and follows the biblical story in many ways, yet at times can seem a bit trite. But definately worth the read.
I like Tommy Tenney but...  Jan 3, 2008
This book is not my favorite. I have read a lot of Tommy Tenney's books and I believe he's better writing non-fiction than fiction. His fiction is almost too simplistic, lacking something that I can't really put a finger on. I much prefer his God Chasers series, and his books about spirituality and pursuing God, to his fiction. I think I'll get my fiction from other sources.
There is no Place Like Home  Dec 11, 2007
Accurate every step of the way from the west coast to the east, I rode with Ruth and Naomi back to where Naomi came from. I cried, became hungry and was afraid as they made their way back.

This was a beautiful story that provoked thoughts of love and support between two women with nothing left in this world. They were wonderfully rewarded by God in their loyalty to each other as they fulfilled the call of Him on their lives.

This book would make a great Christmas present this year for someone you love and care for.

Once again, Mark has done a lovely job in bringing his readers into his characters lives.
