Overview
On a late spring day, a daughter waits at the airport for her parents' plane to land and a summer visit to begin. Before the summer is over, however, her father will come to live--and die--in her sunroom. And her newfound faith in her heavenly father will uphold her as she learns how to let go of the earthly father she adores. But so much more happens in that brief season: a century of family memories unfolds like a beloved quilt. A father and daughter reconcile their differences about faith. A daughter takes her first tentative steps toward understanding her mother. And the story continues to unfold as several generations journey to bid good-bye to the man who has been the energetic center of their family. Beautifully rendered by a writer who knows her craft, Riding the Dog might have succeeded as a tribute alone; but Jan Groft does not retreat from the darker corners of memory, cobwebbed with pain and remorse. Rather, she exposes them honestly to the light of God's unfailing love. This book is for anyone who is part of a family, who longs to understand self in the midst of family, who has helped a beloved family member pass from this life to the next, or who will. "Jan Groft speaks through every page of this warm-hearted and moving memoir with candor, humility and an abundance of grace. Her journey with her family moves not toward a death so much as toward a deeper embrace of life, both immediate and everlasting. Full of wonder and hard-won wisdom about letting go and letting faith guide the process, Groft's story is, above all, about the gifts of love in its many forms." - Ellen Lesser, author of The Blue Streak and The Shoplifter's Apprentice.

More About Jan Groft

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Having encountered unexpected moments of grace in her own grief journeys, writer Jan Groft set out to find others who had felt lifted, even momentarily, out of their sorrow.

"As a caregiver or survivor," she asked, "what got you through each day? What did hope look like?"

Their answers affirmed her own experiences of feeling embraced in times of loss. From them, nine healing gifts of grace were revealed, inspiring the shape of her new book, As We Grieve: Discoveries of Grace in Sorrow.

A former President/Creative Director of an award-winning advertising agency, Groft, now a personal essayist, also uses her communications skills listening to the dying and those they leave behind, volunteering with hospice patients and facilitating writing workshops for the bereaved. She holds an MFA in Writing from Vermont College and is the author of a memoir, Riding the Dog: My Father's Journey Home.

Jan Groft currently resides in Lititz.

Touching the heart and the soul  Oct 15, 2004
Beautifully written, delicately crafted, this luminous work touches the heart and soul in many ways, page by thoughtful page.

It makes you think, it makes you wonder, it often makes you reach for a tissue.

There is magic here -- and you cannot read "Riding the Dog" without being greatly affected, deeply moved.

I loved it!

A wonderful read  Oct 1, 2004
This is one of those books that, once started, you just don't want to put down. Heartwarming to the end. Jan seems to have captured the soul of her family in this book. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

LOVE TO READ!!  Sep 14, 2004
I laughed and cried my way through this intimate, compassionate portrayal of a family's love and deep devotion to a wonderful father. I believe it was a divinely inspired gift to Jan Groft, from the Lord and her father, to write this moving testimony to God's saving grace and mercy. Those who read it cannot help but be touched and drawn closer to a faith that completely trusts in the outcome of God's plan for their lives.
