Rick and Bubba who?  May 19, 2010
I love reading relationship books, so Rick & Bubba's Guide to the Almost Nearly Perfect Marriage sounded like a hilarious look at a serious issue. Even though Rick Burgess and Bill "Bubba" Bussey are New York Times Best-Selling Authors and famous radio personalities, I had never heard of them. If I had listened to their show, perhaps I would have enjoyed this book more.

I was disappointed to find that the book was not a "guide" at all, but a collection of stories that mostly made their wives look bad. (A few were at the guys' expense.) At the end of the story there was no resolution, no sage advice on how we could avoid the same mistake, just a lot of stories that I would never tell about my husband, trying to get a laugh by making him look bad.

There were also lots of references to fishing and hunting and other activities that neither I nor my husband has any interest in. It was difficult to connect with the authors because we had few similar interests. The only part of the book that truly spoke to me was the chapter The Unthinkable, in which Rick discusses how their faith and their love for each other helped him and his wife through the loss of one of their children. It was honest and uplifting.

The rest of the book was a struggle to get through, the attempts at humor just not hitting my funny bone, with the exception of the last chapter, The Book of Blame. This mythical book is said to be passed down from mother to daughter to teach women how to lay the blame for everything (weight gain, global warming, and meteors hitting the earth) on your husband. My husband and I both found this hilarious. If only they had written The Book of Blame instead of their un-guide!

Funny Book  May 1, 2010
If you are a fan of Rick and Bubba's radio show originating from the heart of Alabama, you will love this book. Even if you are not a fan, you may appreciate their attempt at bringing to light challenges that every couple faces in their marriage. Rick and Bubba take a light-hearted, humorous approach in addressing the differences between a husband and wife in areas such as personal hygiene, shopping, and communication.

Some men will be enlightened to know that grunting is not an appropriate response to the question of "How was your day?" You will gain some insight into if and how you should answer a question. Some questions are traps that should not be walked into.

Through the use of southern humor, Rick and Bubba communicate some relevant points that will make your marriage more effective and definitely more enjoyable as you come to appreciate the unique differences of your mate.

Funny look at Marriage, more for guys then girls  Mar 8, 2010
Rick and Bubba's Guide to the Almost Nearly Perfect Marriage is funny and well written. It uses the Bible as the basis for many marriage concerns. I had never heard of Rick and Bubba before but they are hilarious and use many of their real life situations to make their points. I do have to admit that I am not married so some things aren't as relevant to me as they might be to someone else. Also, I think this book is more geared toward a man, this is probably because it is written by men! This doesn't mean a woman would not enjoy it, I did, but some things are just more for the guys in this book. The book has lots of jokes and comedic situations sprinkled throughout, makes for a interesting and quick read. I, an unmarried girl, told many of the jokes and situations to my (married) parents who found them funny especially my mother. Guess it takes a woman to find "Rick and Bubba's Shopping List" funny! Rick and Bubba have been married for 33 years between them and each has several children, so they've lots of experience in both marriage and parenthood. They conquer lots of topics such as apologizing (The Ten Worst Ways to Say I'm Sorry), communication (Grunting Is Not a Language), and date nights (Worst Date Nights in History). Sound good? Need a new and funny marriage book? Go check this out!

Funny and Powerful  Feb 26, 2010
Rick and Bubba are radio personalities of the comedic sort, and that is very clearly reflected in their hilarious guide to marriage. Although they in no way claim to be marriage experts or counselors, Rick and Bubba do have plenty of personal experience in marriage from which to draw many tips, hints, and suggestions for surviving a marriage of your own.

There were times as I read the book that I just cringed. One of my struggles with comedy is that laughs are typically bought at the expense of someone, frequently a spouse. Many, many laughs were bought in this book at the expense of Sherri Burgess and Betty Bussey. And there were many times when I, as the reader, wanted to ask, "Do you really and truly love each other? Is this really what biblical marriage is about? Will this book really have a positive impact on readers needing to grow in their marriages?" Several years ago I read a great bit of advice - never say anything negative about your spouse in public. Never. Both book and radio are both very public forums, and Rick and Bubba seem to have plenty of negativity to share about their wives and marriages in both forums.

Having said that, however, I recognize three things. First, humor is attention grabbing, and many powerful points can be made - and burned into memory - through the use of humor. Second, humor tends to break down guards and barriers that prevent people from hearing truths. Third, there are people who will listen to things wrapped in humor who will not listen to it in any other way.

And in this book, Rick Burgess and Bubba Bussey have used jokes about their wives and marriage to pack quite a punch.

Despite their barbs at their wives and their marriages, Rick and Bubba bring home some fantastic truths in their marriage guide. They deal with some powerful topics from finances to communication to forgiveness. But my absolute favorite chapters are "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" and Enemies of the Mate". In those two chapters, Rick and Bubba deal with the very thing that made me struggle through the book - respect and honor for your mate. I have never read a marriage book with a more direct and powerful description of what it means for husbands to love their wives as Christ loves the church. Their reminders to wives of Christ's command to submit to their husbands in Christ was presented as powerfully as any preacher could have presented it.

And they did it all in a book full of laughter and fun (and just a few tears).

In the end, despite the barbs and the poking of fun, I have to give Rick & Bubba's Guide to the Nearly Perfect Marriage a big thumbs up.

I received this book for review from Thomas Nelson's BookSneeze review program.

Rick and Bubba's Guide to the Almost Nearly Perfect Marriage  Feb 3, 2010
Rick and Bubba definitely do it again - their reverence for the institution of marriage and the ability to make us laugh at ourselves mix perfectly in this "guide." Sharing their memories of early married life and some very funny experiences put you at ease immediately. Deftly handing a sturdy rope to those who may be in need of earthly help and are having trouble, Rick and Bubba let the reader know that while things are not always wine & roses, things don't have to be vinegar and thorns either.
Above all they counsel patience and understanding - both valuable beyond price in any kind of relationship. With these gentlemen sharing their "Oops" moments and then their "repairs" - some of which worked as hoped, some didn't - hehe. These guys make us feel like "one of the guys" and feel lighter, smarter, and happier because of it. As a first step towards working on yourself and alongside your partner, this read will help to adjust the atitudes and blinders that exist...
