Reviews - What do our customers think?
great book  Feb 8, 2010
This book delivers what it says. I have read, seen and taught so many different parenting videos and books and feel that this is a book to add to the top 3 if not 1. It should be the foundation (other than the bible) to build your parenting vision. It comes from a different perspective than your usual parenting book. It is more about a focus than specific ways to handle raising kids. It can help motivate and give a clearer purpose behind parenting. The rest is up to you if your'e open to possible constructive criticism, since it could open you up to rethink what your goals have been.
Great buy  Oct 1, 2009
The book was small, easy to read and the contents were relevant for the purpose to which the author intended.
Give me the facts ma'am, just the facts!  Feb 14, 2009
Cracking the Parenting Code: 6 Clues to Solving the Mystery of Meeting Your Child's Needs

George Barna always gets down to the nitty gritty. The book was full of facts and figures, yet his hope for this generation is evident. Barna never fails to deliver.
Statistically but not biblically driven  Feb 5, 2009
I'm surprised by all the positive reviews of this book. Christians looking for Christian parenting books should make as their first criteria in judging any such book: how Scriptural is the content? If the content is not grounded in the Word, it is simply another pop psychology book.

In this regard, Barna's book falls on the pop psychology side. Barna derives parenting principles based on "what the research shows really works" ...i.e., data-driven.

Some things (like being counter-cultural) I agreed with...and happened to be consistent with the Scriptures even though Barna did not give any Scriptures. Unfortunately, without the Word to be the anchor, it's dangerous to leave the reader to subjectively "agree" or "disagree" with Barna's theses, which are all based purely on his proprietary data. And as any researcher will tell you, you can make the data say whatever you want based on how the question is framed, who you ask, etc. Furthermore, it's possible to derive different conclusions on the same data depending on your own personal biases. So "what the research shows" is neither infallible nor inerrant.

This comes more into play with conclusions that are contrary to the Word. For example, Barna mentions that there was no consensus on how discipline was meted out among Revolutionary Children, thus espousing a view that any form of discipline will work. Unfortunately, that view is highly unbiblical. And since the topic of discipline (particularly for younger children) is so vital, having a biblical view of discipline is also vital. Yet this book trivializes it b/c his data trivializes it.

Christians are not called to parent based on principles derived from research; we are called to parent based on the Word. Thus, this book is flawed at its very foundation, despite Barna's apparent good intentions.

A much more scripturally-based approach to parenting is found in Dr. Voddie Baucham's book "Family Driven Faith", and a more detailed (but still highly scriptural) approach to discipline is found in Tedd Tripp's book "Shepherding A Child's Heart".

I'm all for data to show us the state of things, but definitely not to give us parenting principles. The Bible gives us the parenting principles. As Christians, you can debate with people and you can debate the data, but you can't debate God through His Word.
Great Parenting Book!  Oct 5, 2008
This book details the research done by the Barna Group in the area of parenting. The research was based upon talking with parents who had raised "Spiritual Champions" and with the "Spiritual Champion." The research indicated a great need for parents to be a part of their children's lives in all facets. It also included parents helping their children to make the right choices and choose the right friends. Finally, the book focused on the parents responsibility to raise their children in this world. The parents did not and would not abdicate their role as the parent for anyone else to take on. The parents took charge in the reas of moral character and spiritual growth.

This book is very challenging for parents and delivers on many great points. Barna has created a primer for parents to read who want to raise children that serve God and serve other people. Too often parents exchange their role of being a parent for other items in their lives such as a successful career or successful social life. This book directs parents that they need to abandon that thought pattern and seek to serve God by taking the utmost interest in their children. This part of the book especially challenged me in the areas of taking a greater interest in my children then in my profession. The greatest change I can make in this world will not equal raising godly children.

The one weakness of the book was the lack of instruction on the proper years in which to discuss certain topics. It would have been good to include a timeline of when certain subjects such as sex, drugs, and alcohol need to be discussed. It has been my experience that parents stall in discussing these subjects until it is too late.

This is a very good book for parents to read and understand. I highly recommend it.
