Item Description...
Overview
The book of Revelation has been both the most abused and one of the most ignored writings in the New Testament. Revelation has frequently become a non-functioning part of the canon for many persons in the church. Mitchell Reddish believes that the church has an obligation to reclaim the book of Revelation and allow it to speak afresh as a powerful voice containing the message of God. The commentary of the book of Revelation combines serious scholarship with contemporary application of the texts, helping the modern reader understand and appreciate the last book of the Bible. The visual and auditory richness of Revelation is an important part of the presentation of John's message. Reddish maintains that the visions, symbols, and seemingly strange images in the book are to be experienced more than explained, for the genius of Revelation is found in the cumulative effect of these imaginative components of John's writings. The unique features of this commentary are its three-fold format for each section of the biblical text: (1) a commentary section containing critical analysis and interpretation; (2) a section that makes connection between the text and the modern reader by suggesting contemporary applications of the test; and (3) special interest material related to the text.

Rival for First Place - Bonus PDF  May 8, 2010
This commentary was my first and only purchase of this series (Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary), but it has certainly turned my head to view the other volumes when selecting future commentaries.

For those of you who are concerned with scholarship, you have no worries here. The bibliography is extensive, the author's use of extra-biblical literature is timely, and his engagement with the Greek text is precise but not burdensome. The organization of this commentary is superb, has some very excellent features, and is loaded with them. Some of them include features such as the "Sidebars" that offer historical information, outlines of the literary structure, definitions, insightful quotations, notes on the history of interpretation, relevant illustrations, and art works that have interpreted this passage. The understanding of the text is highly related to the culture and context. All of these are indexed for easy access. The author engages the finest of scholarship but I believe that the most profound aspect of this commentary is what is termed "Connections". Here the author provides some of the most profound theological insights and implications that you will ever find in a commentary. They are thoughtful, timely, and engage your thought world. I could say much more.

I have read most of the important commentaries on the Revelation and if I had to choose only one, this would be it (so far--- 2010). I utilized this to teach a Sunday School class and people finally felt freed from the stranglehold that "popular" eschatology and apocalypticism have in our culture. This is not that genre of commentary but I do wish that those who hold to that would give this volume a chance. It offers a searchable pdf format too that makes note-taking a breeze. All that's left to say is "Get it."
