Item Description...
Emphasizes the importance of stillness for sanity and wholeness, reminding people that Sabbath is a gift to prolong lives, enrich relationships, increase fruitfulness, and make joy complete.

Publishers Description

Widely-acclaimed author Mark Buchanan states that what we've really lost is "the rest of God-the rest God bestows and, with it, that part of Himself we can know only through stillness." Stillness as a virtue is a foreign concept in our society, but there is wisdom in God's own rhythm of work and rest. Jesus practiced Sabbath among those who had turned it into a dismal thing, a day for murmuring and finger-wagging, and He reminded them of the day's true purpose: liberation-to heal, to feed, to rescue, to celebrate, to lavish and relish life abundant.

With this book, Buchanan reminds us of this and gives practical advice for restoring the sabbath in our lives.

Community Description
In The Rest of God, author Mark Buchanan says that the Sabbath is essential to our full humanity and faith. God set forth a rhythm of work and rest that if restored to our lives will bring prolonged life, enriched relationships, increased fruitfulness, and abundant joy. For the majority of us who have endless demands and stifling daily routines, discovering the "rest of God" is the solution to "not enough time."

Reviews - What do our customers think?
save your money  Mar 4, 2007
This is the worst book that I have read in a while. The author's thoughts do not follow a logical sequence in a chapter and he contradicts himself throughout the book. Save you money.
Bible and Life Study  Nov 12, 2006
Well written, very insightful and worth every moment of time you invest in reading this exceptional book. I and two other men as an accountability group, just finished this book and we all felt this was an exceptional book that caused us to rethink how we spend our time not only in our private devotions but also with our family and community. It also caused us to look at our work, our families, our life from a totally different perspective.
More Than A Book  Nov 9, 2006
This is more than a book - it's a study guide and wake up call on how to live our lives. It's a whole new way of keeping Sabath and using Sabath to become the people God wants us to be and to find the peace we long for.
arrogant, foolish and lewd  Sep 9, 2006
I was eager to read this recommended book: The Rest of God by Mark Buchanan. I have read the introduction through chapter four and also chapter nine. I cannot read anymore. I find this author to be in error. He is also arrogant, foolish and lewd.

On page 72, Buchanan writes, "One thing stops God dead in his tracks." He is very haughty to assume that anything stops God! Making this statement Buchanan implies that we can control God. (This is a reflection of his overall attitude of arrogance.) We can control our relationship with God by distancing ourselves through sin but we cannot control Him. Buchanan goes on to say on page 72 that, "Pride usurps God." Again I would have to disagree with him. Nothing usurps God! God is bigger than our sin. God is bigger than anything we could even begin to image. Pride destroys us and our relationship with God but it doesn't take Him by force!

Buchanan writes on page 61, fifth line, "I fell asleep...." (I am too offended to type the whole scene.) This is completely unnecessary detail! I am quite disappointed that a "Christian" author would find it necessary to include this visually provocative detail in this paragraph; irrelevant information for this topic. By the way, Joshua Harris addresses this issue well in his book, Sex Is Not the Problem (Lust Is).

Because of these statements and many others in this book from Buchanan I do not respect him as a Christian leader. His display of arrogance, lust, foolishness and pride make me question his qualifications as a pastor and teacher. There may be some tidbits of wisdom in this book but they are hard to find and I have no desire to keep searching through this book because so much of what he says here is offensive to me.
Resting is Good  Aug 31, 2006
I'm a huge Mark Buchanan fan.

His writing style is both lucid and lyrical. When it comes to presenting a fresh approach to the time honored and at times time worn practice of sabbath rest -- he gets is mostly right. Most of the insights he shares on reinventing Sabbath are helpful and encouraging -- especially for those of us who take life at too fast a pace too much of the time. Admittedly there are places where Buchanan's stories and illustrations seem disconnected from the truths they are meant to elucidate. But even then -- they have a memorable quality all their own.

Like I said -- I'm a huge Mark Buchanan fan and 'The Rest of God' didn't change that.
