Helpful Book  Feb 26, 2010
Bethany House has done it again. First "The Karma of Jesus" and now "Religions of the Stars." In "The Karma of Jesus" author Mark Herringshaw took the time discuss the God's grace in comparison to Eastern Religions. In "Religions of the Stars" author Richard Abanes looks at the buffet of "religions" in Hollywood. In both books the authors attempts were to educate on other religions. Abanes takes this opportunity to respectfully present foundational information about each "religion." I think he does a good job at presenting the basic beliefs of each "religion." This book is very helpful for Christians to have a working understanding of Oprah's New Spirituality, Mormonism, Buddha, Scientology, Kabbalah, and the Occult. The belief systems that have been promoted by influential celebrities have been been slowly eroding away how Christianity is viewed and understood. Even though Abanes is respectful in his presentation of these "religions" his book helps us to understand how different they are and how they can affect us as Christians living in America. I recommend this book to all Christians.
Religions of the Stars by Richard Abanes  Sep 4, 2009
There are so many "religions" out there to choose from, I use that term loosely. Before I became a Christian I was very curious about all these religions as I was looking for a place to land. This book really solidifies my Christian faith and can help those who are lost understand where these other religions fail us.

Hollywood seems to be a breeding ground for all these, for lack of a better term, whacky religions. Religions of the Stars by Richard Abanes covers religions such as Mormonism, Scientology (that is a very interesting chapter), Kabbalah, Buddhism, the church of Oprah (another very interesting chapter), and the Occult. I did not get the impression that the author's purpose of this book was to bash these other religions. It was his purpose to inform and educate Christians so when we are confronted by religions other than our own, we can be prepared to be a witness for Christ. He uses many facts and quotes from followers of these religions to support what he is saying.

Religions of the Stars simplifies these, at times, complicated religions and explains their beliefs in detail. I really appreciate this book and enjoyed reading it. I highly recommend it not just to Christians, but also for anyone who is curious. This book is straightforward, honest and very well written.

After my lengthy quest for the truth led me to finding Christ, I have a new appreciation for my faith and I am grateful I did not choose to follow these other religions that tend to confuse and mislead.
"Religions of the Stars"  Sep 2, 2009
Author Richard Abanes delves into the different beliefs of the mega-stars of today in his work "Religions of the Stars." A Christian, Abanes compares the core values of religions such as Scientology, Buddhism, Mormonism and the occult to Christianity to illustrate the short-comings of non-Christian belief systems.

The chapters focus on one form of religion at a time and Abanes offers an in depth explanation of the core beliefs of each religion and the names of the stars who follow the specific set of beliefs. An eye-opening book, "Religions of the Stars" is a well-documented work written in an easy-to-read conversational style.

For a well-rounded education on the popular religions today and how they fall short when compared to the truths of Christianity, I highly suggest "Religions of the Stars" as an informative, entertaining read.
Interesting to a point  Aug 28, 2009
The premise is pretty straight forward. Abanes takes several well known Hollywood religions (New Age, Mormonism, Scientology, the Occult - Wicca, Kabbalah, and Buddhism), and breaks them down. Each one is given a significant chapter, which tells you who in Hollywood believes in the religion, what exactly the religion is and involves, and extensive history on it. Abanes also takes a few paragraphs at the end of each section to compare each belief to Christianity.
Here are my gripes. Admittedly, as a regular viewer of E!, I was mostly interested in the Hollywood aspect of this book. However, the idea of Hollywood behind the research serves as merely a starting point. There isn't much emphasis at all on why it matters what Hollywood believes. The presence of "Hollywood" in the book has more of a feel of naming-dropping than a reason to care. The history of the subjects are at times very interesting, for example the brief bio of L. Ron Hubbard, the creator of Scientology, is too good to miss. However, sections of the text can become dry and repetitive. Moreover, the portions of the text that give advice on how to convert believers of the religions falls from the book's purpose, and in my opinion discredits what the author says he means to do. On the other hand, in comparing religions to Christianity, the author does so in a way that seems more informative to the people that would be most interested in the subject, and yet isn't offensive to the belief in question (most of the time.) He also does a great job of defining where Hollywood has glamorized to the point of distortion certain religions (Kabbalah being a huge example).
Overall, if you are a completely interested in the subject of religion social science, then you would give this book more stars than I did. If you are looking for some insight to Hollywood social science, then I think there are much better choices available.
What Hollywod Believes and How It Affects You  Aug 24, 2009

Religions of the Stars is a fascinating look at what celebrities believe.

You've probably heard that Tom Cruise is a Scientologist and Madonna follows the teachings of the Kabbalah. And you know that Oprah Winfrey is very spiritual. But what does it all mean? And more important, how does it affect you? Why is Scientology such a controversial religion? What does the Kabbalah teach? Which faiths are embraced by Richard Gere, Marie Osmond, Ashton Kutcher, and many other celebrities? How does Christianity line up with the popular religions of Hollywood? Inside this book you'll find the answers to these questions and more.

Norman L. Geisler, Distinguished Professor of Theology and Apologetics and co-founder of Veritos Evangelical Seminary said, "This book is a long-overdue and illuminating look at the various faiths being espoused by today's most influential celebrities." Todd Wilken, Radio talk show host wrote, "Albanes employs a researcher's skill, examining our celebrated people and their religious beliefs. Then he applies the apologist's art, gently evaluating those beliefs in light of the Christian faith."

We need to be aware of how today's Hollywood spirituality affects the movies and televison programs we see, as well as how our children might be influenced by the way these religions are portrayed in the media. Richard Abanes--former Broadway performer and television/film actor--blends his knowledge of the entertainment industry and his expertise in the area of world religions and pop culture in this intriguing examination of the religious beliefs embraced by various Hollywood stars.

I found this book interesting and informative. Even though I am older and my children are grown, I still have a concern for others. I recommend this book for all young families.
