Reviews - What do our customers think?
Opening the Door  Jun 7, 2008
I can see how Steve was a bit disappointed in this work.

The Reformation was, in part a political revolution. To establish the "Protestant" identity, any practice which could trace its roots to Rome was denounced, banned or even destroyed - the age of Rational Christianity was born. Emotional spirituality was looked upon with suspicion.

With this book, Rice is reopening a door long closed. It is a look with post-reformation eyes on the great spirituality traditions discarded by the great philosophers of the Zurich Movementand their English successors, the Puritans. What Rice shows that even in the need to grow the new faith tradition based on logic and rationality, there was still the very human need to engage the heart when contemplating the divine.

This is an excellent first book with resources to further delve into this subject.

Inner Compass: An Invitation to Ignation Spirituality
More like insights than spirituality  May 21, 2007
I purchased this book, as the title says, hoping for spirituality from a Reformed perspective. Instead what I got is mostly insights. A little is about struggles that Puritan women went through in the colonies but their wills stated that their journals be burned upon their deaths so excerpts only from the journals of women who'd died suddenly are quoted. The struggles they went through are heart-rending. He also quotes Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion. I must've bought this book six months ago but relegated it to bathroom reading because it was putting me to sleep. The writing is very good and it covers a lot of material. But if you're looking of deep spirituality, look elsewhere.
