Following the Biblical story line of creation, fall-redemption-consummation, Spykman's new paradigm systematics represents a notable revision of the traditional loci method--Spykman has reordered the basic Christian dogmas in a bold attempt to overcome the rationalist-scholastic influences inherent in the older method.

A Magnificent Tome On Reformed Dogmatics!  Jul 25, 2001
Spykman's tome on dogmatics (systematic theology as it is known in the US) is rather unusual. He organizes his work not along the traditional lines of systematic theology which usually starts off with a prolegomena follow by the usual topics on God, Anthropology, Christology, etc. Rather, his work is organized along the lines of biblical narratives such as Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Consumation where the usual topics of dogmatics are located.

Although unusual, it does give the reader a good overview as to how the dogmatic doctrines of Protestant (Reformed) Christianity are related in terms of salvation-history. More importantly, it makes this work easier to read and grasp as a whole when compared with the traditional approach of organizing dogmatics.

Coming from the Reformed (neo-Kuyperian) tradition, Spykman has shown an irenic temper by not over-emphasizing certain cardinal tenets of the Reformed tradition such as church government and predestination. By focusing his thoughts along the lines of salvation-history, Spykman has succeded in bringing to the attention of the reader the centrality of the Christian faith rather than the sidelines.

All in all a very important work in dogmatics which should be read by Christians of different traditions, in particular, his prolegomena which gives some interesting suggestions as to how dogmatics should be done.

A brief word of caution, this work is not meant to be read by someone who have no background on theology or at least a passing acquitance with dogmatics or history of Christian doctrines. You will get lost in the maze of discussion of this tome. For this reason, it is good if you read other works on systematic theology (especially those within the Reformed tradition) to get a grip on this tome. It is not an easy-going book because of its subject but a rewarding experience awaits the reader who takes time to digest it.

All in all, I recommend this work to anyone who is serious about systematic theology.

Cosmic Semiotics, the "Word of God" writ Large, very Large !  Jul 17, 1999
Gordon Spykman's "Reformational Theology: A New Paradigm for Doing Dogmatics" may be the most innovative contemporary theological prolegomena available. Obviously before his time, and yet a relative unknown(from Calvin College), Spykman has managed to address many of the most perplexing issues extant within the modern\postmodern morass. From the seemingly impervious enculturated dichotomies i.e. sacred\secular, faith\reason, fact\value, subject\object, Creator\creature, to the perinnial philosophical antinomy's - subjective\objective, practical\theoretical, individual\collective, foundational\antifoundational,etc., he has managed to reconcile perceived discrepancies and greatly expand theological\philosophical horizons through considering the intrinsic possibilities available by understanding all of existence as the "Word of God". From within the trenchant Reformed ("Reformational") NeoKuyperian theological stream of historic Christianity Spykman debunks the modernist reduction of the "Word of God" to nothing more than the "word of man" spoken louder, as well as the American Evangelical tendency to reduce Gods "Word" to the "Holy" Bible - a book that mystically ministers to individual consumers "become" Christian. Employing the contours of the Christian Worldview and its historic trajectory - Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Consummation, he explicates Gods dealings with man as communicated and sustained through the "book" of the cosmos; including human beings as integral participants in, through, and of His creative and redemptive universal intent. Although this work does not employ the current "buzz" words of postmodern theological\philosophical scholarship the concepts are more than engaged and although he did not seem that familiar with the most recent celebrity philosophers i.e. Umberto Eco, Jean Francois Lyotard, Derrida, Richard Rorty, Stanly Fish, et al, it is just as well; for the facility with which he argues the Reality of Jesus Christ as "Word of God",the historic compilation of the Christian Canon as "Word of God", and the entire Universe as "Word of God"- in their entirety and mutual inextricability - leaves their ideas comparatively impotent and accordingly, their identities somewhat less important. "Reformational Theology" revolutionized my life and thought, and persuaded me of the actual (not virtual) reality of existence, created for Jesus Christ, and of the truth that only through Him are all things and by Him do they in any way consist! A "must read" on both counts; hence "Reformational Theology" and "Cosmic Semiotics, the "Word of God" writ Large, very Large" indeed!
