Item Description...
Through a thorough examination of biblical teaching on forgiveness within the context of ancient Jewish culture, Dr. Leah Coulter dispels the notion that forgiveness is a one-way street. She explains the true depth of forgiveness and the freedom that results in a genuine heart of repentance. With personal stories and other examples, she gives readers a pathway to repentance and forgiveness, as well as showing them how to find healing and justice when they have been wronged by someone who has not repented.

A Tool For Transformation & Healing  Jan 1, 2007
Rediscovering the Power of Repentance and Forgiveness is a timely book for the Christian community. The critical crises of our day cry out for meaningful relationships within God's community, and a clear understanding of repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation is crucial to developing such a viable, transformational community. Dr. Leah Coulter has ministered for over 25 years to wounded individuals who have been "sinned against," and she has written this book from the cries of their hearts as she has accompanied them in their pleading with God for justice. In reviewing Scripture and seeking God's righteousness in these matters, she has developed a two dimensional model to explain the biblical perspective of forgiveness and repentance which clarifies the biblical position and exposes the mis-interpretations of religious individualism. Sadly we rarely hear preached a two dimensional approach to forgiveness. Rather we find sincere, well-meaning pastors and counselors teaching forgiveness from a one dimensional position (between the individual and God only) and leaving victims further burdened with irreconcilable challenges to forgive and let go rather than opening up avenues with God as well as with the offender for healing and freedom.
Rediscovering Repentance and Forgiveness is a book every pastoral counselor should read and digest if s/he is to be effective in ministering God's love and healing to both sinners and those who have been sinned against. As well, every pastoral leader dedicated to developing a Christian community of love and transformation needs the tools of understanding provided in this book. Finally, since everyone has been a victim sometime in his/her life and sinned against others as well, it is difficult to think of anyone who would not benefit from reading this book. I highly recommend it.
Healing, comfort and truth for both the sinned against and sinners  Dec 30, 2006
The importance of this book and Dr. Coulter's teaching cannot be overstated. It is a must read book! I know: we live in a time of too many books, preaching, and teaching. Therefore I make the claim of `must reading' advisedly. Dr. Coulter has mined the depths of God's heart and returned us to the biblical teaching of forgiveness instead of the pat answers we're accustomed to. This book charts the turbulent waters that separates forgiveness and justice, repentance versus vengeance. Dr. Coulter opens up the standard evangelical understanding of forgiveness beyond the spiritual (Vertical Dimension with God) to encompass the human element (Horizontal Dimension with people).

Forgiveness, biblical forgiveness, seems to have floundered on the shoals of both conservatism and liberalism: one side seeing the importance of only one dimension, the former--vertical (God), the latter--Horizontal (People). Sinners get off easy with the demand of unconditional forgiveness and the sinned against get rewounded by the church that makes unreasonable and unbiblical demands. This book offers the truth that such polarization misses.

"Rediscovering the Power of Repentance and Forgiveness" is a healing balm to the wounded and transformative life for wounders seeking repentance and restoration. This book isn't only from a scholar but from a Pastor and her passion and love for people comes out on every page. Jack Hayford endorses this book and Dr. Coulter's theological chops are undisputable. If we all read this book the body of Christ would be closer to the unity Christ prayed for and desired so much. Blessings.
profound book   Aug 14, 2006
this book is so profound that you can apply it to everyday life or even with really hard circumstances. It answers the questions to injustice and why forgiveness is so loosely a term used, and a term that is defined by the world in so many ways, worldy ways, and then even in Christianity different ways than what it originally means from the original language and intent in biblical writings. This book clears up what the definition of forgiveness and repentence is and clearly puts things back into context scripturally. The charts and illustrations are very helpful and profound in it of themselves. It is a book well worth reading and applying your lifestyle as a Christian to it. It can also be a universal book used to reach those that have been sinned-against, as well as helping the sinner see what it truly means to repent. We all fall within these 2 categories of being both the sinner and sinned-against. On a life scale, we can see the scales in our own lives if the scale is heavier on the sinned-against side or on the sinner side. Either way, this book gives you tools on how to approach Christianity, life, and God differently and more meaningfully. These are simple tools, and when applied, with the help of The Holy Spirit and those that walk alongside us, those that have gone before us and know how hard it is on both sides: sinner and sinned-against, to assist us with our walk. For the non-believer, it helps clears up what it truly means to be a Christian; how the saving grace of God assists us and that there is freedom when confessing your sins and really going on a horizontal level to those you've sinned-against. It also helps those that have been sinned-against to truly see why their pain and hearts cries are justly so because we have a justice-making God. God is not only a God of mercy, compassion, forgiveness, but He is also a God of Justice and Righteousness. We often forget those parts. This book helps bring the balance back in so justice, healing, and forgiveness and repentence can truly be unfolded--working together in harmony--and living out the true meaning of what God intended by Jesus dying on the cross, resurrected, and a hope that is more real and more true today.
