Redemption  Nov 11, 2009
Redemption, by Karen Kingsbury with Gary Smalley, is as it's name suggests, a story of Redemption. Kari Baxter Jacobs is hurt and angry after one fateful phone call exposes her husband's affair. Her husband, Tim Jacobs, is anything but remorseful and when Kari's old love moves back to town, Kari is faced with choices that will determine her future and the futures of those around her.

I've never been a humongous fan of Karen Kingsbury, but I did find this book to be exceptionally well-written. It is the first book in the Redemption series which features five books based on the Baxter family. The characters were so real and the situations were so authentic that I felt as if I was really right there in their minds and circumstances. To be honest, I wasn't expecting this book to be such heavy reading. It isn't the kind of book that you read when you want a happy bit of fluff. No, this book is so real. The situations are exactly the type of situations that people face in real life. I especially liked how all the characters were personally addressed even though the book centered mainly on Kari.
Redemption  Oct 8, 2009
Karen Kingsbury is one of my all time favorite authors and I haven't been displeased with anything I've read of hers. Her ficitional characters seem almost real to me I often have a hard time putting down her books, so much so that I have to wait to start her series until I can have of the books b/c I just want to finish them all.
A Story of Redemptin and Love at All Costs  Sep 14, 2009
BOOK REVIEW: REDEMPTION by Karen Kingsbury with Gary Smalley

Redemption is the first Karen Kingsbury book that I have read. I knew she was a New York Times best-selling author, but I thought her books were romance novels for women. Although that's not altogether bad, I just thought it wasn't for me. Redemption is definitely a page-turner. I found it difficult to put down. It is a good book with a good story line.

When Kari Baxter Jacobs finds out that her husband is involved in an adulterous relationship and wants a divorce, she decides she will love him and remain faithful to her marriage at all costs. This books shows how God can redeem seemingly hopeless relationships, and it illustrates one of Gary Smalley's key messages: Love is a decision.

Redemption is the first book in the five-book Redemption series that Gary and Karen will write about the Baxter family--their fears and desires, their strengths and weaknesses, their losses and victories. Each book explores key relationship themes as well as the larger theme of redemption, both in characters' spiritual lives and in their relationships.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about relating to family and friends and working out a troubled marriage.
I Can Relate  Sep 7, 2009
I can relate to this book, since I had a similar thing happen in my marriage. Unlike the character in the book, we did get divorced. I can understand some feelings/actions that Kari had/did but it's not that easy to be 'perfect' when something like this happens. Her family was helpful and understanding and some had the same reactions that most people would-divorce him. It tells Kari and Tims emotions throughout and shows what can happen when we don't appreciate one another and communicate.
The Beginning of a Saga  Sep 2, 2009

This book begins the saga of Karen Kingsbury's Baxter Family series. With this book, we meet Kari Baxter Jacobs who finds out that her perfect life is ruined with the news of an unfaithful husband. Meanwhile, she's being tempted herself by an old boyfriend. I felt that this is a scenario many women unfortunately have found themselves in. Your world gets shattered and you seek to get revenge when temptation walks in. I felt that Kari's reactions were realistic and understandable. Kingsbury does a good job of portraying the hurt and betrayal that comes with a spouse who's been unfaithful. The Baxters are close knit and it's refreshing to see big families that are there for each other.

While I enjoyed the book, there were times when I felt it to be a bit soap opera-ish. Yes people, even Christians, experience infidelity and temptation, but the result ends up being the same every time. Plus there's just a lot of drama in this book. I half expected to hear that slow dramatic music at the end of every chapter with a character looking off in the distance inquisitively. I think what bothered me the most was the cop out way the story ended up going. It just seems that this incident always happens in Christian fiction to allow for a second marriage when the first one is going horrible. The ending is also just a little too neat and tidy for my taste.

Still this book handles topics not normally tackled in Christian fiction and gives light to those who are struggling with these same issues. If you are looking for a big long series to read, then you definitely want to start with this book. I've read all the other books involving theBaxters and they are enjoyable to read and give a good lesson as well.
