Publishers Description
After decades of living on the edge, Heather King settled into sobriety, marriage, and a financially lucrative but unfulfilling career as an upwardly mobile lawyer. As someone who had reached middle age "never believing in much of anything,"she found herself in the last place she thought she'd end up: the Catholic Church. An unforgettable, fervent, darkly funny tale of an ongoing, stumbling conversion, "Redeemed" will appeal to fans of Lauren Winner's "Girl Meets God" and Anne Lamott's writing. King's refreshing sense of humor, mesmerizing voice, and piercing honesty will touch readers whatever their beliefs.

Reflections That Can Only Come From a Soul Who Has Wrestled Demons  Nov 9, 2009
In "Redeemed," NPR commentator and Catholic author Heather King offers us a deeply personal and revealing story of her journey from darkness to light, from the edge of death to joy. King's childhood included Sundays at the Congregational Church; her experience with God and religion taught her "to be good" and "He won't hurt you." With time, she grew up not believing in much of anything and stood against God in general and all churches on principle. She avoided God and until age 34, her life consisted of dark barrooms, chain smoking, and men - a life filled with depression, loneliness, boredom, and anxiety.

Then, one day, while in Nashville, she had an experience that caused her to fall to her knees and feel repentance, "the Prodigal Daughter returning home." While the book is filled with each step of the process, she brilliantly shares her inner self, her humanness, and insights revealed on her journey, including:

* God - those who do not believe in God are very invested in how smart they are
* Christ - came to address the deepest mystery of humankind - the mystery of suffering
* the Eucharist - if we do not come through Christ, in contact with Him - which is the reality of my broken self, and my broken brothers and sisters -then we will miss the greatest gift He left for us
* the Catholic Church - previously, Catholicism was unthinkable, taboo
* the Virgin Mary - gave her life completely to serve God
* sex - sacred
* the human body - a temple
* abortion - a terrible wound to the Mystical Body of Christ as a result of deep spiritual poverty
* addiction - a symptom of a soul divided deeply against itself: of mental, emotional, and, above all, spiritual conflict

And there is much more...Each section is rich with reflections that can only come from the soul of a person who has wrestled with his/her demons. "Redeemed" is deep, and as I learned, not a quick read. King has packed too much meat and potatoes in this great book - consume it over time and relish its savor. She now has had the experience of God and reminds us that God walks among us so simply that many refuse to believe it; He so fulfills our deepest yearning we're blind to the fact that it actually has been fulfilled.

Redemption can come by opening our hearts and minds to God, who through Christ, has pitched His tent in our midst.
I wish I could read it again for the first time...  Sep 29, 2009
After devouring "Parched," I inhaled "Redeemed." Heather King is a beautiful writer - vulnerably honest, extremely generous and highly intelligent. Her main thesis - that we are lonely and immensely loved - will resound deeply with vulnerable and lonely readers, i.e. absolutely everyone. Discussing this book with a friend, we both agreed that "Redeemed" is a soothing balm for today's prilgrim souls.
This is one person's journey that was heartwarming and insightful  Apr 23, 2009
This is an easy read that touches upon spirituality in a gentle way. It provides you a peek at a writer who is also an alcoholic stumbling back to the Catholic church. I am none of these but after a recent family death, it kept me going. And I have even since attended church, gone to alanon and started writing.
An inspiring dogmatic romp  Sep 2, 2008
Like any AA story of redemption, this one satisfies with its power of grace and devotion, supplied from of all places, the much maligned Roman Catholic Church. Kudos to Heather for sharing her story, even if she does veer off into some strange doctrinal commercials at times.
A Spiritual Misfit Holds Steady with Hope  Aug 26, 2008
I have had a deep attraction to the Catholic Church over the past year. Sure I've made spiritual retreats with Catholic friends, read Thomas Mertons The Seven Storey Mountain, and it doesn't hurt that one of my favorite records in the last 9 months is from a Brooklyn hipster rock outfit called the Hold Steady who write songs that depict the "beauty in forgiveness and redemption, especially in regards to the Catholic Church." ( - The Hold Steady: Rewards And Redemption)Separation Sunday

Heather King's Parched is a piece of spiritual testimony that not only shares her conversion experience, but also shares some insight about why these experiences are essential in order for many people to live a full life. I've also wondered like King, how some people can get along just fine without any concept of God, spiritual awakening, or even the slightest amount of religious conviction and seem to operate just fine? Meanwhile, as Redeemed depicts, the people who attain to grow in the spiritual life trudge through an existence marred with the constant realization of character defects, sins, shrouded in moments of despair and frustration.

Fortunately Heather King equates her trials and tribulations with her triumphs over adversity by living in the spiritual life. It is the humble triumph over these spiritual adversities that instills hope in the heart of the reader and encourages us to seek the redemption that can satiate us all.
