Item Description...
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. PHILIPPIANS 3:12-14, NIV When Jake Simon dies suddenly of a brain aneurysm, God allows him to return to his youth and relive the summer of 1986, the summer that he feels ruined the rest of his life. The plot unfolds like a mystery as he discovers previously unknown truths that improve his poor self-esteem and take away his regret. Unfortunately, a series of disasters set him further and further from his goals of righting wrongs and providing wealth for his future family. And after he is committed to a mental hospital and later thrown in jail, things turn out much worse than they were originally. However, in the surprising conclusion to the story, Jake receives far more than he'd set out to achieve.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A second chance at life  May 30, 2005
What would you do if you had the chance to relive the past 15 years of you life? Now, what if you could remember the mistakes you'd made and could change them all? That's the premise of Russell Williams's novel, "Reborn Again". Jake Simon, a thirty-three year old lab tech, has a beautiful wife and a baby on the way. Unfortunately, he hates his job and has no money saved up for his expanding family. One night at work, after a massive headache, Jake dies of a brain aneurism. An angelic visitor tries to usher him to heaven, but Jake feels he's left too much undone on earth to enjoy heaven. After a brief discussion, the angel gets permission to give him a second shot at the last fifteen years.

When he awakes, he finds himself back in his eighteen year-old body on the last day of school. But the beautiful thing is he remembers everything that will occur in the next fifteen years! He sees the chance to go back and fix all the mistakes of his past and save the life of a friend who'd been crippled in a shooting Jake had failed to stop.

But terrible things happen when Jake becomes secure in the future. Maybe things aren't as certain as he thought. The high school sweetheart he married is no longer the refined woman he remembered, but an immature teenager. Add the fact he still feels thirty-three and a little strange going out with an eighteen year-old, and the dilemma worsens.

Even his plans for the future don't seem to work out perfectly. Knowing the future money-making stocks to pick sounds perfect-unless you're eighteen with no money. As flawless as the setup seems, it seems like things keep falling apart around him.

Williams does an incredible job with this story. It's not a science-fiction time travel story, despite the way the premise sounds. Instead, this is a character-driven novel full of three-dimensional people with real lives. The events in the story happen logically, and you really feel for Jake as the world falls apart around him even though he tries to make things better.

The ending of the story is great too, with one final plot twist thrown in. Williams is a very talented writer, knowing what to hold back from the reader and what to give away.

Despite being a first-person narrative story (I hate those), I really enjoyed this book. Williams immerses you in the sights and sounds of 1986 (the year Jake wakes up). As a matter of fact, the setting becomes as much a part of the story as the characters themselves. Rather than tell you a hall is full of high school kids, Williams gives you insight into the fashions they are wearing (did I ever wear acid-washed ripped jeans to school? Man, what was I thinking?) and even the music playing. You'll feel like you're watching a John Hughes film here.

In the end, Williams is able to bring everything to a satisfactory and logical conclusion. If you're a child of the 80's, you'll love this story.
Be careful what you wish for!  Apr 25, 2005
This was a great story about the big What If? What if you could relive your life, knowing what you know now? Jake, the main character, starts out in the story with a lot of regret. He gets to go back in time and try to fix things but things only get worse. But what's neat is that every disaster either pulls him closer to God, or teaches him things about his life that help him to get rid of his regret. The surprising ending is very moving because he puts all his trust in God and is finally at peace. On the opening page of this novel, it reads: In heaven there is no regret. In heaven there is only wisdom. By the end of the story you will beleive this is true. This is definately the most unique Christian story I've ever read and I'd recommend it to anybody who may have questioned God's role in their lives.
Not true christian or religion  Apr 17, 2005
This book should not be in the religious section, as it is obviously written by a person with no purpose in life. The characters are living in regret and obviously have never read: "You, LORD, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you." Isaiah 26:3 (TEV)

This book is a sad depiction of how people live in the past with regrets and should've, would've, could've. Remember the present is the best gift a person can give his or herself. If you are looking for a truly uplifting book read Rick Warren's "Purpose Driven Life" of Spencer Johnson's "The Present".

J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye was more uplifting than this book. I wish the author luck in therapy later in life if this book is chocked full of real life experiences.
Next Time Brains; if we knew then what we know now!  Apr 11, 2005
Russell Williams created a story that warmed my heart. I read this book twice, to recapture the good feelings that lingered after reading his unique finale.
I work in a Laboratory, and can still laugh at the accurate situations, stressful conditions and humor that he captured when describing the daily routine in a hospital lab.
Thank you, Mr. Williams for writing a thought provoking novel about one person's life, and the chance to re-live his mistakes.
I would strongly recommend this book to everyone, and that's just what I do!
mekback  Apr 9, 2005
I hadn't read anything by this author before. This book was recommended to me by a friend. My heart connected with the main character immediately. SO many times I wish I could go back and change something in my life. I sure hope there is a sequel to this book as I want to know more about how things turned out.
THere were so many valuable lessons to learn in this book from forgiveness of others to forgiveness of self to acceptance to trust. It was chocked full of ideas to make me think. I could so relate to the book. I enjoyed the style with rich,oh so human characters. If you like Karen Kingsbury and Randall Arthur read this.
