More About Jay Edward Adams

Jay Edward Adams For over 40 years Dr. Jay Adams has been a modern day prophet calling God's people back from their dalliance with unbiblical psychological theory to a renewed confidence in the power of the Holy Spirit and the sufficiency of God's Word to equip the man of God to help his people with problems of living and relationship. Happily, many have heeded his call and over the years a movement, both deep and wide, has developed, consisting of pastors and other Christian workers who have been trained in and are practicing the kind of truly biblical counseling God intended for His people to receive.

Jay Edward Adams was born in Baltimore on January 30, 1929 and was born again about 15 years later in response to the reading of a New Testament that was given to him by a friend. He received his formal training at Reformed Episcopal Seminary (B.D.), Johns Hopkins University (A.B.), Pittsburgh-Xenia Seminary, Temple University School of Theology (M.ST.), and the University of Missouri (Ph.D.). He pastored churches in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, served as a denominational official, a professor at Westminster Theological Seminary, the director of the Doctoral program at Westminster Theological Seminary in California, and then as a church planting pastor in South Carolina. He was also the the founder of the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation in Philadelphia, the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors, and Timeless Texts which now publishes his books.

In 1999 Dr. Adams retired from the pastorate of the church he had planted in South Carolina and has devoted his time to writing and lecturing. In the fall of 2001 the Redeemer Biblical Counseling Training Institute (RBCTI) was established at the Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Moore, SC to provide a vehicle by which Dr. Adams could continue teaching.

When word got out that Dr. Adams was lecturing regularly again we began to get requests for tapes and inquiries about studying by extension. While many of the lectures Dr. Adams has given over the years are available from a variety of sources we have concluded that it would be a blessing to God's people if we could make a quality, structured, video taped course of study available for those who desire to be better equipped to minister the Word of God. Thus INS was born.

While health problems have restricted Dr. Adams' travel schedule, requiring him to slow down physically, he is still anxious to have an ongoing ministry, especially to pastors. He continues to write and though he has to sit behind a desk when he teaches, his lectures are still energetic, lively, and challenging. Those who have been enrolled at RBCTI this past year have given the Institute high marks and report it has been a great blessing in their lives and ministries.

Jay Edward Adams was born in 1929.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Great survey of nouthetic counseling  Mar 24, 2007
This book is a great review of Biblical counseling. It covers the basics very well, including some resources as to where further information can be found. The information is current (since it is Biblically based), but the resource list is somewhat dated because there has been much written in this field in the past few years.

This is a great resource for basic training. It is a must for all Christian workers, both vocational and volunteer. I would honestly say that it should be in every Christian's library. The ideas in this book are developed deeper in The Christian Counselor's Manuel, Competent to Counsel, and (Ready to Restore:)A Theology of Christian Counseling.
Readiness Involves Ability--hence the book  Apr 4, 2005
"Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted." (Galatians 6:1)

Ready to Restore is a high tribute to the authority of God's Word, as Dr. Adams actually expects Christians to take action on Galatians 5:1. Adams believes that each person is responsible to obey this passage, not merely the pastor alone.

To that end, Adams writes, "Is Christian counseling the work of a highly specialized group of persons? Does it belong to pastors and elders of the church alone? What of everyday man or woman-in-the-pew Christians; do they too have a ministry of counseling to which God has called them as laymen? ... The answer is simple, yet profound: God calls every Christian to counsel some people, somewhere, at some time about something..."

Adams addresses the barriers to obedience which the "you who are spiritual" must overcome: fear, knowledge, spiritual maturity, and integrity.

It is a short book, but worth every minute spent studying and reading. I simply love it when an author places his trust in God, God's Word, and assumes that God's people will obey. Adams demonstrates an immense respect for God and for Christians in this book.
