Trans-Atlantic Theology  Oct 20, 2005
It is unfortunate that this collection by Robin Gill is not better known. It shows a very good cross-section of theological thought during the 1990s in Britain and North America at a time when much of the theological project in academia seemed to be edging away from 'mainstream' kinds of categories toward empowering lesser heard voices. This book contains essays from across the spectrum of theological discussion. As editor Robin Gill states in the introduction, 'it was tempting to include European, South American, Asian and African theology as well, not to mention recent Jewish and Islamic theology. Yet in the end it was decided that this would make the Reader too diffuse and too disparate.' There are many such collections available that do survey a broader range, but for those who want insight into the principal Western, English-speaking schools of theology, this is a good text.

This collection is divided into three parts. While it does not attempt to touch on every aspect of traditional systematic theology, it is organised according to broad themes that would be familiar to systematic theologians. The first part is entitled 'God and Creation'. It is divided into three subsections. The first subsection explores the issue of God as Creator, looking at things from anthropological, scientific and philosophical perspectives as they impact creation and the universe. The second subsection begins with theologian Rosemary Radford Ruether and her work, 'Models of God', exploring the concept of God as mother, and has five responses or reviews following. The third subsection (perhaps appropriately) deals with God as Trinity, looking at the issue from the standpoint of relation, doctrine, and soteriology.

The second section is entitled 'Christ and Plurality'. The three subsections here deal with the relationship of Christianity (and the figure of Christ) with other faiths, the issue of postmodernism, and the place of Christ/Christianity in the modern academy (a growing area of concern for theologians and academics in secular institutions). The first subsection contains essays on different aspects of interfaith work. The second subsection again starts with a primary voice (this time, George Lindbeck) and has several responses to this, in addition to a few other pieces. The third section looks at issues largely dealing with theological education; one drawback here is that they do not address in any real depth the issue of theological education in a primarily secular academy.

The third section is entitled 'Spirit and Community'. This has two subsections, one on 'The Christian Life' and the second on 'Christian Communities'. The first subsection barely touches on liberation theology (a growing area of concern in American theological circles), but does address issues of how to live in terms of ethics and belief in respect of the resurrection and gospel of Easter. It also addresses the issue of feminist ideas in theological discourse. The second subsection addresses the communal aspect more fully, and delves into issues of ecclesiology.

Gill states that one of the developments in the past generation has been the reversal of roles vis-à-vis British/European and American theologians. In times past, America looked to Britain and Europe for guidance and inspiration; now the tables have turned, and America is now considered a theological 'power'. Also, the communal aspect of American theology has begun to influence the way in which theologians in Britain and elsewhere think about method and content.

This is an important text for understanding some of the major currents of theology in the last decade.
