Item Description...
From their origination, the psalms have been the prayer book of the people of God. And since Christ's ascension to the right hand of God, the Christian faithful have found in their words promise, comfort, guidance, challenge, confession, absolution, and, of course, Christ. Martin Luther especially focused on the numerous ways the psalmists referred to Christ and the salvation He brings-our mighty Fortress, our Shepherd, our Light. Reading the Psalms with Luther helps a new generation of Christians use the Psalter in a devotional manner. Each psalm opens with a brief introduction from Luther, revealing his understanding of the Christ-centered message of the psalm and its model for Christian prayer. Each psalm is pointed so it may be pray through chanting, just as it has been for centuries. Following the psalm text is a short prayer. Includes the ESV translation of the Psalms; a suggested schedule for reading the Psalter. Beautifully packaged and makes an ideal confirmation, wedding, or new member gift

Publishers Description
Martin Luther loved the Psalter. This is noticeably evident in his short introductions to the psalms as he allows readers a glimpse into his theology and prayer life. Luther's writings demonstrate how he saw the Psalter as a Christ-centered model for Christian prayer. He classifies each psalm and applies the message of the text to the life lived under the cross. Using the text of the psalms from the English Standard Version, coupled with classic prayers, readers use this edition to familiarize themselves with this beloved book of the Bible. This devotional also helps readers deepen their understanding of the Christological aspect of the psalms and Luther's perspective on them. Open Reading the Psalms with Luther today for a fresh look at one of Luther's favorite Old Testament books.

Martin Luther

MARTIN LUTHER (1483-1546) was professor of Bible at Wittenberg University, and this exposition of Galatians came out of his classroom. Undoubtedly the most powerful discussion of justification by faith prepared by any of the Reformers, this commentary on Galatians has had a profound impact on many through the centuries, including both John and Charles Wesley.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Glad I own it.  Apr 27, 2010
We use this as a family devotion everyday. Love it. I just wish the Bible version was NKJV, instead of the ESV.
Great Book  Apr 9, 2010
I'm so glad I purchased this book. It is an in depth look at each of the psalms according to Luther.
Develop a Better Appreciation of the Psalms  Feb 8, 2010
Most of us may briefly encounter the Psalms during worship services, but the Psalm of the day seldom is used as a basis for a homily/sermon. Luther's presentation of the Psalms attempts to put them into a framework based on the Ten Commandments and the Lord's Prayer. He also tries to show how they lead to Christ.

I'm no theologian, and thus can't judge how effective Luther's treatment of the Psalms is, however I am enjoying the opportunity to read the Psalms at a more measured pace, and giving them more thought. I bought this book because I am a Lutheran, but I think other Christians would find this book worthwhile.
A Lutheran Psalter  Aug 18, 2008
Although I am not a member of a Lutheran denomination or synod, I have relatives, friends, and neighbors who are Lutherans. Thats pretty hard to avoid, living in South-Central Minnesota.

This book has a handsome cover and each psalm has introductory comments and a prayer afterwards, provided by none other than Doctor Martin Luther. This book is excellent for personal use, and would make a nice gift, also.

I would really like to see Concordia Publishing issue a leather bound edition of the excellent Lutheran Book of Prayer combined with this Psalter. For those who use both books in their devotions, such a book would make for more convenience. However, until such an edition ever is published (if it is ever published), one can't go wrong owning both of these books.

Besides this Psalter and the Lutheran Prayer Book, Concordia Publishing House also sells a very handsome edition of the Book of Concord, which every conservative Lutheran home should own (whether a member of the LCMS, WELS, ELS, CLC, LCR, or even the Laestadian and Apostolic Lutheran churches). Add the ESV translation of the Bible and these 4 books would make an excellent home library for the Lutheran Family.

I own these four books and I'm not even a Lutheran! (smile)
My discription of Reading the Psalms with Luther  Aug 23, 2007
Though I expected this volume to be more of a commentary, it is still a blessing. Luther gives information concerning the situation surrounding each Psalm, connects it to the 10 Commandments and the Lord's prayer, as well as giving instructions how to chant the Psalms, each one being broken into chanting phrases; there is a selection of different chant tunes to use. (People unfamiliar with chanting, or reading music may find some difficulty.)

Following each Psalm there is a prayer.

It is edifying and instructional.
I do not regret purchasing it. Rhoda Blaauw
