Reviews - What do our customers think?
Potentially useful, but overrated and contains some serious flaws  Feb 19, 2007
This New Testament seems to fill a gap in the market, but I question whether that gap is real or percieved. Many others have commented that it is helpful in that it allows them to read without getting frustrated at their lack of vocabulary knowledge. If that is the case, then great! In a very important way, who am I (or who is any reviewer) to knock a book like this if it gets someone excited about reading the GNT.

I believe that the general level of excitement in many of these posts is misplaced. First, to get any use out of this volume, one must know NT vocabulary down to 30 occurrences. I think this is about 500-600 words (all I know is that 50 occurrences if about 350). Once you know those, in my opinion you are ready for the "real thing," i.e. go get a UBS4 (not an NA27). The UBS4 is very user-friendly and has a basic dictionary. This Zondervan product sounds like a Panacea of Greek information to read some of the reviews. It is not.

Second, I would not purchase this volume, nor recommend it, simply based on the fact that it uses backwards engineering to arrive at its Greek text. I don't know why this is even remotely acceptable to anyone. Why not just translate an English version into ancient Greek? That is more or less what this version is. Simply put, why introduct this sort of error into a Greek text that will be widely read by many people? I just don't understand it.

So, at the end of the day, if you want to read the GNT, buy a UBS4 edition (NOT an NA27) and start reading!
Great Volume  Feb 10, 2007
Note: I ordered 2 copies of this GNT. One came with a handy dictionary in the back which listed all words used greater than 30 times in the New Testament. The other didn't. Zondervan has made two different editions and this site sells them both under the same entry. Caveat Emptor.

It's still a good book without the dictionary though.
A very handy tool for aspiring Greek readers.  Jan 4, 2007
I found this GNT to be a very useful tool and an attractively made book. The soft Duo-Tone cover looks and feels quite nice, though it is easily scratched. The system of footnoting vocabulary used less than 30 times is an immense help to intermediate level Greek students. I carry it with me all the time and read along in church or chapel whenever I can. After 5 semesters of Greek, I can read through most passages I encounter very quickly by using the vocabulary footnotes. The font could be a little better, but it is adequate. A concise dictionary at the back (like the one often included in the UBS) would be immensely handy for more frequently used vocab words that occasionally slip my mind, but I suppose I should just study harder. Still, this would make the book more useful to young Greek students without having to buy and carry a separate dictionary/lexicon. I am also not sure why Zondervan felt compelled to go with the "NIV approved" decisions on some textual variants, but they footnote any deviations from the UBS and all this is explained in the introduction. Overall I'm very pleased with this work. I'd love to see a matching Hebrew Bible Reader's Edition someday too, but I won't hold my breath.
Very god  Dec 10, 2006
I've just had it for a week, but I've already become quite excited with it! I highly recommend it. I've been studying greek for 1.5 year, with medium grades, and this is just at the right level for me.

Great for learning  Nov 3, 2006
I would not use this text for deep study and exegesis. But if you are looking to get comfortable with Greek and have a consistent time in God's word in the origianl language this is the tool for you. It is very accessable with a lexicon at the bottom of each page. If you are learning Greek, I highly recommend this. It will be well worth the $20 it costs you.
