Overview
Quo vadis?-Where are you going?-is an appropriate question to ask of the current evangelical movement. To get a bearing on evangelical thought and assess future directions, the editor of the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, Andreas J. Kostenberger, has gathered selected addresses from past presidents of the ETS and contributed a thorough introduction and probing epilogue of his own. Covering the early years, the maturing movement, and recent times, the addresses-which span JETS' first fifty years-include discussions of foundational doctrinal issues, exegetical and theological practice and methodology, and current concerns delivered by some of evangelicalism's most distinguished leaders. These presidential addresses give today's scholars a much fuller and deeper appreciation of the history of evangelicalism and their place within it. Readers will also experience great hope for the future of a movement whose best days, by God's grace, are yet to come.

Past Voices From Sagacious Leaders  Nov 7, 2007
This work celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Journal of the Evangelical Society. It features 9 selected presidential addresses delivered by past ETS presidents. This book has both historic importance and contemporary relevance for the issues evangelicals face today.

In seeking to preserve orthodoxy today, we benefit by hearing from voices from the past, who planted an unswerving commitment to the whole Word of God, and imbibed faith in that holy counsel. In its brief the essays offer wisdom-from-above to a post-modern world below.

'This magisterium of dogma over the Bible's literal-historical sense was classically expressed by Vincent of Lerins as (quod ubique, quod semper, quod ob omnibus creditum est)'what has been believed everywhere, always, and by all' - which to me seems to automatically exclude Pentecostalism/Charismania.

These addresses contextualize the complex issues the Society has faced in the past 50 years. The difficulty lies therein that the Society itself has Evangelicals who hold to differing views on these issues. What was sought to be the determining factor and the sole non-negotiable criteria, was their combined belief in the inerrancy of Holy Writ. Thus hermeneutical approach became a vital part in the Society's development of apostolic truth.

'This abusive practice of historical criticism is a pagan precipe and ought to be rejected as alien to the nature of Holy Scripture. The challenge of the hour calls Christian scholars to careful discrimination, scrupulous criticism of our personal presuppositions and methodologies, humility in the face of our limited knowledge, and a patient, loving, yet penetrating analysis of the attempts of our colleagues to bring historical criticism to the aid of a believing interpretation of the biblical materials.' Alan F Johnson, pg 107

'For God in Christ also has given His bride a vow. He will bring His Church to Himself as a cleansed, spotless bride (Eph 5:26,27)...where is our faith in God that His vow to us is His unalterable promise? pg 131
...because the survival of theological conservatism was at stake with liberalism seemingly having emerged numerically and administratively victorious in most denominations. But God made His vow to the Church long before all of this happened.' Darrell L Bock, pg 135

'So, on the first statement of an assertion, it is conceivable. The second time, it is possible. The third time, is it plausible. The fourth time it is probable. The fifth time it is true. My third hope is that the evangelical theological scholarship of the 21st Century will adequately argue its assertions.' Millard J Erickson, pg 177

'The problem of deceivers, false teachers and teachings, vain discussions, divisions over worldly wisdom, was a danger to the the New Testament Church and has continued to be a danger thru the ages of the Church down to the present day. The apostolic admonition was to attend to the revelation that had been given and to be faithful stewards of it.' Craig A Blaising, pg 211

The mandate that is held throughout this book, is that the ETS should accept or reject, include or exclude, uphold or refute, tolerate or dismiss, align or withdraw, encourage or expose - all those things alien to Scripture and its authoritative nature. All agendas must submit to the common, but necessary and crucial demands of Scriptural scrutiny. This responsibility as servants of the Church still remains the noble task of biblical scholars and theologians, as it has been throughout its worldwide existence, and will continue to be in the 'global village'.
