Item Description...
Self-consciousness is a foe to greatness in every line of endeavor. -from the chapter "Foes to Success"

A phenomenal bestseller when it was first published in 1894 and greatly expanded, by popular demand, to two volumes in 1911, Orison Swett Marden's Pushing to the Front is a classic of the literature of personal motivation that remains startling relevant today. Marden, a forerunner of Dale Carnegie and Norman Vincent Peale, Stephen R. Covey and Anthony Robbins, explores a wide range of issues that hold us back from success in all arenas of our lives.

Chapters in Volume 1 cover: * Choosing a vocation * The triumphs of enthusiasm * What a good appearance will do * A fortune in good manners * Tact or common sense * Success under difficulties * Uses of obstacles * Observation as a success factor * Public speaking * The triumphs of common virtues * and much more.

"History furnishes thousands of examples of men who have seized occasions to accomplish results deemed impossible," Marden notes... and shows us how to seize those occasions, too.

ALSO AVAILABLE FROM COSIMO CLASSICS: Marden's Cheerfulness as a Life Power.

More About Orison Swett Marden

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Orison Swett Marden (1850-1924) was an American writer associated with the New Thought Movement. He also held a degree in medicine, and was a successful hotel owner. Marden was born in Thornton Gore, New Hampshire to Lewis and Martha Marden. When he was three years old, his mother died at the age of 22, leaving Orison and his two sisters in the care of their father, a farmer, hunter, and trapper. When Orison was seven years old, his father died from injuries incurred while in the wood, and the children were shuttled from one guardian to another, with Orison working as a "hired boy" to earn his keep. Inspired by an early self-help book by the Scottish author Samuel Smiles, which he found in an attic, Marden set out to improve himself and his life circumstances. He persevered in advancing himself and graduated from Boston University in 1871. He later graduated from Harvard with an M.D. in 1881 and an LL.B. degree in 1882. He also studied at the Boston School of Oratory and Andover Theological Seminary. Marden supported himself during his college years by working in a hotel and afterward by becoming the owner of several hotels and a resort. Financial reverses ended that career, and in 1893, he was again working as a hotel manager, in Chicago, during the time that the World's Columbian Exposition was attracting visitors to that city from all over the world. It was during this period that he began to write down his philosophical ideas, with the goal of inspiring others as he had been inspired by Samuel Smiles. In addition to Smiles, Marden cited as influences on his thinking the works of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. and Ralph Waldo Emerson, both of whom were influential forerunners of what, by the 1890s, was called the New Thought Movement. Marden's first book, Pushing to the Front, was published in 1894. He followed this with several more volumes on the subjects of success, the cultivation of will-power, and positive thinking. He founded Success Magazine in 1897 and was also a regular contributor to Elizabeth Towne's New Thought magazine Nautilus during the first two decades of the 20th century. Like many proponents of the New Thought philosophy, Marden believed that our thoughts influence our lives and our life circumstances.

Orison Swett Marden was born in 1848 and died in 1924.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
"The epitome of success"  Jun 18, 2003
Orison Swett Marden was the original editor-in-chief of the now defunct "Success" magazine. In fact, he probably rolled over in his grave when the magazine went out of publication. It was a time of mourning for me. In fact, I was just in the process of renewing my subscription when I found out..."Success" was no longer successful (how ironic).
This set of books is excellent. Most of the writing is examples of successful people from the past and present (1911). This type of motivational writing tends to get repetitive, however, there is a lot of advise tucked carefully between the many examples given. It was a very different world when the author wrote this book, but as I read it I noticed, the more things change, the more they stay the same. One difference I like is the chivalry and honesty exhibited from the time period. Even the highest standards of decency today are a far cry from that time. It was a lot of fun reading some of the examples from that era and knowing they were current events. These books are well worth the read, if you can find them.

This book is the greatest book that I have ever read next to the Bible. It is in my opinion the premiere self help of all times. After reading this book your life will never be the same. Marden is able to capture the essence of life, self development and true success. If you have read other self help books you will see how many modern day writers, used much of his material to develop their thoughts and philosophy.

Although this book was written in the early 20th century, its message is truly timeless.
