Item Description...
Can psychology help you solve your problems? For over a century, psychology has offered answers to people seeking help with problems of living. But are those answers reliable? A psychotherapist wants you to know the truth. Drawing from years of experience in the field, Lisa Bazler evaluates the claims, beliefs and practices of secular and Christian psychology. She not only exposes fallacies and failures, but more importantly, she points the way to true healing and fulfillment. Whether you're searching for personal solutions, or know someone who needs help, this book offers practical and effective counsel based on sound biblical principles. Come and discover the overcoming life: Know the true causes and cures of depression, anxiety, hyperactivity, addiction, family dysfunction and other common problems of living. Learn why secular and Christian psychotherapy, twelve-step programs and support groups aren't the answer. Understand the severe dangers of psychiatric drugs that your doctor doesn't tell you. Discover how the power of God can begin to transform your life today.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
For Christians and unbelievers a MUST read  Mar 17, 2007
Thank you to the authors for this book. This is a MUST read like the subject line says, if you are a Christian or not. And it is good that one of the authors can write this from experiences and knowledge she gained while working in this field too. It has helpd to put things in persective, knowing that something was not right but not being able to put a finger on all. As a parent where a Dr. suggested meds for a 13yr old this was a BIG help to understand ALL that is involved. Parents should not take a Dr.'s advice blindly, for their kids or themselves when it comes to this subject matter. We get second opinions for other health problems, so why not this as well. Again thank you to the authors for sharing their knowledge and insite.
Misinformed; poorly researched!  May 11, 2006
One of the basic points of this text sets the stage for an "opinion piece" presented as a factual or clinical text. The authors base this text on the experience of one [professional] and her [...] husband. The text claims that Psychologically based Counselors proceed by their "gut" and not by any protocol. It goes on to state that there are zero protocols for decision making in therapy. Any respectable student or practioner of psychology can tell you differently. There are a multitude of software programs that "automatically" set-up diagnosis and treatment protocols based on testing results and bio-psych-social information. The authors go on to stamp Gods name on their opinions as many "religious" people do. This is a poorly researched and poorly written text that may mislead many Christians wanting to "help or be helped."
A challenge to the mind set.  Oct 8, 2005
This book challenged my mind set and point of view. While I didn't agree with every jot and tittle, it was eye opening. Overall I agreed with what Lisa Bazler had to say. The case that she makes is a strong one. It is very true that psychology and Christianity are as diametrically opposed as witchcraft and Christianity. Christians will benefit from reading this book and considering what is said. It provides a whole different framework, biblically based, for dealing with the mind. To the non Christian it may sound totally off, but should be considered within the framework of the bible.
Removing Scales  May 28, 2004
After reading one of the reviews from this website; yes, in fact, I do believe that there was an Adam & Eve, a talking Serpent, and that Isaiah 7:14 predicts the coming of Jesus Christ, our Savior! And I do believe that this book has indeed revealed a basal truth that psychology is man-made, as man understands the soul, mind, etc. I also believe that through the power of Jesus Christ people are miraculously saved and forgiven of all of their sins and that healing begins the minute we say, "yes," to Him. I have worked as a social worker for mental health and have just recently left the field...this book just 'happened' to arrive at our church! The book is very general and is good for a basic understanding of the detrimental lies of psychology and how it is shaping a world of 'zombied-out' folks with absolutely no hope. True healing does come from the Lord and prayer does absolutely change lives. But, this can only be witnessed once you are born-again. Otherwise, the Bible sounds awful silly and simple-minded. The fact is, regardless of it sounding weird as a non-believer, the truth is the Truth and it does set you free. I have witnessed this in my own life as well. Thanks and God bless.
Some good, some awful  Apr 24, 2004
Some of the authors' criticisms of psychology are indeed the end they end up throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The authors make it sound like there is no objective scientific evidence for anything that psychology and psychiatry say and that it all rests upon the subjective musings of mental health professionals. I guess they haven't heard of the amazing things we are starting to learn about the brain with techniques like P.E.T. scans. The analogy of expecting the same diagnostic process with an assessment of an ankle injury and a behavioural disorder is like trying to compare the techniques of making a paper airlane with assembling a 747.The book as well is littered with anecdotes and quotes favourable to the authors' position. It is not a balanced review.
The author likes to harp on the over prescription of psychoactive medicine and YES they are at times inappropriately prescribed but to dismiss them totally out of hand is irresponsable. I have seen many people do fabulously well on medication and no they haven't suffered "permanent brain damage".
Ultimately this book is mostly fundamentalist religious propaganda. If you believe in a literal Adam and Eve,talking serpents and that Isaiah 7:14 foretells of Jesus then this book is for you.
If you want a serious review of the pros and cons of mental health issues look elsewhere.
And last but not least, I have seen many people pray for help with their emotional problems but unfortunately it usually works no better than placebo.
