Challenge and insight for preachers and storytellers  Nov 1, 2007
As a biblical storyteller and workshop leader, I find Richard Swanson's Provoking the Gospel of Matthew to be indispensable. A Lutheran pastor and scholar, Swanson integrates current socio-rhetorical and literary Bible criticism, his own careful and insightful responses to the text, and a powerful grounding in Christian ethics.

This book is intended for busy pastors working on sermons. It isn't hard to read in the sense of being highbrow or complicated, but it is challenging to read because it calls the reader into a deeper relationship with the Gospel. Lectionary Year A, Matthew's year, begins in December 2007. This book would be a good companion for preachers or storytellers in the year ahead.

The book has a substantial introduction to Matthew followed by consideration of texts in lectionary order. Swanson's own translation of Matthew is included. Since Swanson calls generously on other writers, I wish that Pilgrim Press had included a bibliography in this book. One has to make one's own, I guess.
