More About Frank E. Peretti, Norman Vincent Peale, Sarah Hall, Jon McGregor, Helen Oyeyemi, Honey Naylor, Becky Freeman & B. Teissier

Frank E. Peretti With more than 15 million novels in print, Frank Peretti is nothing short of a publishing phenomenon and has been called “America’s hottest Christian novelist.” The Oath (Word Publishing 1995), sold more than half a million copies within the first six months of release. The Visitation (Word Publishing 1999), was #1 on the CBA Fiction Bestseller list for four months. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada in 1951, Frank is a natural storyteller who, as a youngster in Seattle, regularly gathered the neighborhood children for animated storytelling sessions, drew comics, and tapped out stories on his mother’s portable typewriter.

His journey toward becoming a writer had its side trips. After graduating from high school, he began playing banjo with a local bluegrass group, then worked as a musician and odd-job man for a small recording studio.

Shortly after he and his wife Barbara were married in 1972, Frank toured with a pop band and then a modest Christian music ministry. He later studied English, screen writing and film at UCLA before spending five years helping his father pastor a small Assembly of God church in the Seattle area. During those five years he labored at night, on weekends, any chance he got, to write his first novel, This Present Darkness, the book that would catapult him into the public eye – eventually. Numerous publishers rejected the novel and Frank gave up his pastoring position to work in construction and odd jobs to make ends meet. Even after Crossway Books published This Present Darkness in 1986, the novel sat on store shelves largely unnoticed.

Two years later, Frank was working at a local ski factory when word-of- mouth enthusiasm finally lifted This Present Darkness onto a tidal wave of interest in spiritual warfare. The book appeared on Bookstore Journal’s bestseller list every month for more than eight years. His two spiritual warfare novels, This Present Darkness (1986) and Piercing the Darkness (1989), captivated readers, together selling more than 3.5 million copies. The Oath was awarded the 1996 Gold Medallion Award for best fiction.

For kids, Frank wrote The Cooper Kids Adventure Series (Crossway and Tommy Nelson), which remains a best-selling series for children with sales exceeding 1 million copies. In August 2000, Peretti released the hilarious children’s audiocassette series titled Wild and Wacky Totally True Bible Stories, reprising his role as Mr. Henry, the offbeat substitute Sunday School teacher found in two Visual Bible for Kids videos. In 2000, Frank released his first-ever non-fiction book, The Wounded Spirit, in which he deals with the problem of bullying.

In all, including his current work, Illusion, Frank has written nineteen books of various size for various ages.

Frank and Barbara live a simple life in rural Idaho. He leads worship at their church, Barbara paints in watercolor, and they enjoy being with their close friends.

Frank E. Peretti has published or released items in the following series...
  1. Cooper Kids Adventures

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Fast-paced, interesting read  Feb 25, 2007
As I started into the book, the fast-paced writing style caught my attention, and kept me interested. The character development was good, and I found myself wanting to know more about who had killed the "Prophet", (his father), and how they would circumvent the ring of deception at Channel 6 News. I have read Peretti several times before, and enjoy his writing style, and this book kept me interested until the end!
A Somber But Insightful Novel  Jan 1, 2007
Frank Peretti had opened the doors to Christian fiction with "This Present Darkness" and its follow-up, "Piercing The Darkness." Peretti here leaves his two part series, with a different emphasis.

One thing to keep in mind is that Peretti is writing from a Pentecostal/Charismatic theology. Not all Christians would believe God works as he does in the book. One critic (a Christian) pointed out that the "prophecies" of protagonist John Barrett are nothing compared to the Biblical examples.

This book deals with a newscaster, and thus looks at the world of the local newsstation and some of the conflicts. It also deals with corrupt politics, and the relationship between the media and politics. The central theme of this book, though, is abortion. It involves a pair of deaths that happened due to abortions. It has one character who would consider herself to be pro-choice, yet realize there is a problem with those who cover up unrestricted abortion on demand.

One thing I've noticed about Peretti, which becomes clearer in his first four novels, is some pessimism. This is not the most uplifting book. I will also say that the climax is a little weak; he did better in the other novels I read (the two mentioned above and "The Oath").

Suspenseful, fast-paced read!  Jul 8, 2006
This is an excellent book!! Its fast pace keeps you on the edge of your seat! I could scarcely put it down. Peretti's three-dimensional characters are well thought out. The overall message is a good one. Peretti is not afraid to take a stand on controversial issues, yet he makes it exciting! And the end of the book leaves you feeling really good. I would recommend this book to fans of Peretti or Christian novels.
wonderful read  Jun 11, 2006
This was such a good story. I haven't read any Peretti in a long time, but this reminded me again why I loved his writing so much. Will have to start buying him again... Complex story with lots of good characters. His last scene got me all choked up and made me realize what a gift God has given him to preach the gospel through story. Also gave me a deeper insight into the prophet Elijah when he faced despair after his mighty victory.
Thought Provoking!  May 23, 2006
The Prophet was a powerful and thought provoking book that tackles a controversial issue. I was hooked from page one! The book is about an anchorman who does a little digging after his father's death and discovers a truth about the corrupt abortion business that the government and media go to great lengths to keep hidden. One of the major themes of this book is that despite a person's flaws, God can still use him in amazing ways.
