Item Description...
This work, a revision of the author's Claremont dissertation, examines how women's differing soles in the ancient Greco-Roman world are reflected in the Gospel portraits of women. Focusing on women's varying portrayals in meal or banquet settings, Corley uncovers evidence that women's roles were undergoing radical social change throughout the Greco-Roman world_both in moving toward equality and in returning to a more traditional role. Such spadework helps us in analyzing the conflicting portrayals of women in the New Testament Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Bibliography, notes and an index of ancient sources render this an invaluable tool for studying women in the Synoptics and ancient social attitudes toward women. This volume should be of particular interest to pastors and teachers, as well as college, university, and seminary students.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
This book provides an excellent grounding in the social and cultural understandings that first century hearers would have brought to New Testament texts. Without such background the modern reader risks missing the fullness and the sheer audacity of the early Christian message. In its time and cultural setting, the early Christian church exemplified a radical inclusiveness that directly challenged conventional social mores. Kathleen Corley's scholarship helps us see the gospel writings, and particularly the prescribed role of women in the Greco-Roman world, with new eyes. Her exhaustive bibliography is a valuable resource for further study. The work is both readable and scholarly. All in all, a marvelous resource.

Customs and manners of Bible Times greatly influenced both the Old and the New Testament. Not until the last 30 years has the study of customs within Bible study surfaced as a real area of study. Kathleen Corely has done an excellent job of examining this very interesting topic. Much is revealed especially about Mary and Martha from Luke.
