Overview
Many Christians crave something more from their prayer time. We pray knowing that God hears and answers our prayers, but we also know that prayer should be something more than recited phrases and personal wish lists. God wants prayer to become vital to everything we do. Using Scripture passages, applications, and a prayer guide, Praying With Purpose is a five-week study designed to teach believers how to pray without ceasing. Perfect for church use, small groups, or individual study.

Praying With Purpose  Apr 19, 2010
"Praying With Purpose" by Stephen Rummage is meant to be read in a 28 day period. However, I found the title compelling enough to finish the book in a much shorter time.

Among the points covered include:

1. Despite His busy schedule, Jesus Christ often took time to be alone with the Father in prayer.
2. Praying in Jesus' name means that we have power and privilege only in Him and not of ourselves.
3. God works in prayer to bring us to trust, obedience, and surrender to His purpose.
4. We can be tempted to let our heartaches move us away from prayer.
5. God wants us to ask Him to meet specific needs in our lives.
6. God wants us to wait patiently on Him in prayer.
7. Ways that God restores us.
8. 3 ways God guides us when we pray.
9. Learn to pray first and plan afterward.
10. We will not come to God with our needs unless we are convinced that He can do something to meet those needs.

Whether a new or mature Christian, you will benefit from this book.

Highly recommended.

Fantastic Book  Jun 10, 2008
One doesn't have to scour too many bookshelves to find a book about prayer nowadays. Many authors dwell on the power of prayer, as if prayer has its own intrinsic power, within a personal, self centered framework. Those are a regular commodity. Still, others unabashedly focus on a form of spiritual materialism couched in appealing terms like "blessings" and "happiness" or the "you" self-actualization syndrome that permeates popular theological nonfiction.

Few, however, touch on the true meaning of prayer and the real power that truly lies behind it as eloquently as Dr. Stephen Rummage and his wife Michelle do in this book. Both present their topics in a way that is true to the Word of God in what it has to say about prayer specifically, from the standpoint of doctrine, and the way prayer is presented in the lives of God's people throughout the Scriptures.

Effectual prayer is a vital part of a Believer's walk with God and is thus a salient aspect of Sanctification as it is understood in Evangelical Christianity. As we grow and mature as Christians, our prayers likewise grow in direct proportion to our relationship with the Lord. In this book, for example, we learn what it really means to pray in "Jesus Name" and all the theological ramifications that follow from that. The more we know the Lord, the more we know what to pray about and how to pray according to God's will.

Dr. Rummage, in addition to being one of the finest preachers in America, is also a gifted writer. He and his wife accurately and succinctly explain what a Christian's prayer life ought to be like and do so in a way that is easy to understand and unburdened by difficult and weighty terms that only a well churched person could understand. To help the reader, stories and useful illustrations abound; including examples and pertinent narratives from the Bible. A new Believer will greatly benefit from reading this.
