Item Description...
Drawing on decades of pastoral experience, Thomas Steagald finds ordinary moments morning, noon, and night that can be transformed with prayer. Practical, poetic, and filled with anecdotes, Southern wit, and scriptural reflection, Praying for Dear Life offers a real-time look of prayer in a day of Steagald's life. You'll be inspired to a deeper communion with God without abandoning the life you know.

Publishers Description
Draw closer to God in the ordinary moments of the dayHeadline: Draw closer to God in the ordinary moments of your day. Through lyrical anecdotes, Southern wit, and scriptural reflection, Pastor Thomas Steagald offers this sprawling oak of a work, rooted deeply in a life of prayer. This sepia-toned memoir takes you on Steagald's daily pastoral rounds from pre-dawn rising to a rest found only in the assurance of Christ's mercy. In between is a richly- textured account of little moments seized for consecration - prayers in the shower, coffee at Hardee's, choir practice and the surprises that test our perception of what in our lives is God's business. "It is our faith, and by faith I really mean trust, that no person, no situation, no circumstance exists without Him, or devoid of Him, or apart from His grace." So it is that Steagald dismantles the strict compartments of our ordinary" lives and invites us to offer our entire beings to Christ.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Well worth reading.  Jun 15, 2007
In the introduction of "Praying For Dear Life" Steagald says, "There are few books...that aim at the intersection of prayer, liturgy, the practice of ministry, and memoir. For better or worse, this book does." My vote goes in the "better" column. The overall framework of the book could be described as a Wednesday in the life of the author. Every Wednesday at his church, Steagald holds a service of Morning Prayer, Midday Prayer, and Evening Prayer. The book follows him along from the moment he opens his eyes to a new day to the ending of the same. You go with him to the three services as well as to his other appointments. It's not a journal of events though - rather that one day serves as a jumping off point for the author to share his (substantive) insights into Christian life. It's not a book just for other ministers. It will resonate with laity as well. (I can imagine pastors finding quite a few stories to incorporate into their own sermons from the book though). There is a definite United Methodist slant to the theology (ex. "I believe we are on our way to perfection" (p.164-165)), but that slant does not exclude people from other denominations finding the book helpful or true. As you can tell, it is not so much a book about how to pray, as it is a book about why prayer has been so vital to the author. That being said, there are certainly some prayers recorded in the book that you will probably find yourself flipping back to again and again. One final thing; the author frequently refers to "A Diary of Private Prayer" by John Baillie. Though it won't effect how you read "Praying For Dear Life" you may want to order Baillie's book along with this one (it is also available from this site), so you can see for yourself some of what Steagald refers to.
