Publishers Description
In this six-session ZondervanGroupware video curriculum, award-winning author Philip Yancey probes the very heartbeat---the most fundamental, challenging, perplexing, and deeply rewarding aspect---of our relationship with God: prayer. What is prayer? How does it work? And more importantly, does it work? In theory, prayer is the essential human act, a priceless point of contact between us and the God of the universe. In practice, prayer is often frustrating, confusing, and fraught with mystery. Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? is an exploration of the mysterious intersection where God and humans meet and relate. Yancey explores such questions as: *Is God listening? *Why should God care about me? *If God knows everything, what's the point of prayer? *Why do answers to prayer seem so inconsistent and capricious? *Why does God seem sometimes close and sometimes far away? *How can I make prayer more satisfying? The Prayer DVD and Prayer participant's guide are available separately.

Prayer--Philip Yancey  Apr 14, 2010
This book is the best book on prayer I have read in a long time.
Our Bible Study is reading it together and we get into some of the deepest discussions because of what we read in the book. We are growing as a group and individually through discussing this book. It is excellent.
Prayer does make a difference!  Feb 6, 2010
Thank you - I am enjoying this book very much. Thank you for making it available at such a great price.
Excited to Pray Again  Feb 3, 2010
More than anything, this book has made me excited to pray again. I've started keeping a journal, and am praying more regularly and sincerely because of what I'd learned in "Prayer: Does It Make a Difference?". Prayer is a two-way dialog that has become a wondrous adventure in my life.

Reading this book often makes me feel uncomfortable for Yancey, who is not shy about exposing his weaknesses as he probes for answers to the toughest questions about prayer. Such are questions that I've had about my own faith, but hadn't the courage to ask so openly.

Why must I pray? Why do bad things happen to good people who pray? Does God always answer prayers? Why does the Bible say so much about Jesus praying? Is it OK to complain to God? What about how angry I am at my _____ (coworker, friend, parent, brother, etc)? Where in the Bible can I find prayers that encompass every possible human emotion? He skillfully exposes scriptures that help answer tough, candid questions, while humbly acknowledging that some questions won't be answered this side of Heaven.

Often reaching into his deep well of life experience, he's been able to convey much insight. Yancey is not a person unfamiliar with suffering: last year in Christianity Today, he dealt with his brother's sudden demise after a series of strokes. The sidebar examples throughout the book offer real examples of people suffering and rejoicing, while sharing their prayer experiences.

Yancey is a gifted author who's helped me understand that our God is bigger than I'd once thought, reminding us that God inclines His ear toward those humble enough to acknowledge their Creator.
It Changed my relationship with God  Feb 1, 2010
Phillip Yancey has put together a powerful, comprehensive and sensitive look at prayer. It is definitely not a "how to" book. He has not only tapped into his own life time of personal experience, but also the experience of the many others that he has interviewed over his career. The extent of his research into those in the past who have taken prayer seriously, is amazing. He adds numerous comments from letters he has received. (His ability to catalog these letters also amazes me!) I read the first 20 pages and believed that there was probably not much more to say about prayer, but found that I was still highlighting as profound his comments throughout the rest of the book. I did something I never have done in my 75 years. I immediately reread the book. It was an exciting adventure for this old man. My communication with God has truly reached a new level. I have recommended this book to quite a few of my friends and patients. (I'm a doc)
Yancey Rides Again  Jan 9, 2010
I'm an enthusiastic reader of Yancey's stuff, and I suppose I've read almost every book he's written. I'm a writer too, and he's never agreed to review my books, but I suppose I've got to swallow my pride and give him his due.
Yancey never writes in sugar-coated superlatives. He hardly ever overstates and he despises spiritual haughtiness and pretense. If anything, he steps into the shoes of most Christians who, quite honestly, struggle each day with a life that often seems far from charmed---indeed, is often rife with obstacles, disappointments, and failings. However, his message is never one of hand-wringing or despair. Instead he tries to offer what answers there are, sometimes admitting that he has no idea why certain things happen or why God acts in a particular way.
Yancey illustrates in this book some amazing answers to prayer but he also identifies with the plodding of everyday experience---the times we wonder if God is too caught up in heavenly or earthly affairs to pay any attention to us ordinary mortals.
This is not a devotional work. It is a book for thinking, earnest Christians who truly want to wrestle with hard issues. I recommend it.
