Sorry excuse for a book  May 9, 2006
This is truly a sorry excuse for a book. I am a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts and was forced to read this garbage as part of a research assistanship that I am taking part in. I have to read all popular texts, novels, journals, etc regarding teacher unions. I have come across quite a bit of garbage in my efforts but Mr. Moo really takes the cake.

Mr. Moo completely ignore all of the good the Teacher Unions have done over the years. Instead he focuses on hyper-sensational stories designed shock and awe the reader. Mr. Moo suggests that most teachers are idealists with their heads stuck in the clouds. They don't know or understand that this big bad evil giant, The National Education Association, is controling and oppressing them.

Mr. Moo ignores the fact that the NEA is one of the largest and most democratic bodies in the nation. Of course, the organization is not perfect. But the NEA is the only pushing for education reform that would have a true and positive impact on the lives of students, parents and taxpayers. Instead of recognizing this, Mr. Moo decides that it is the Local School Board that should have more control. Mr. Moo, in his naivette actually believes that the school board will be more responsive to the needs of the community than a democratic organization full of hundreds of local teachers. It is Mr. Moo that wants bureaucracy to hold down and stifle student development.

His "ideas" and solutions to the "problem" are outright laughable. Mr. Moo wants to increase standardized testing. He wants to get rid of the national education association. He thinks that we should "beef-up" the Hatch Act in order to restrict political activity by unions. He supports oppressive right to work laws. Mr. Moo supports school vouchers and charter schools.

This book should be read as a "what not to do in public education".

The book is downright wrong in its misconception of teachers, unions, students, taxpayers and the education system in general.

I feel truly sorry for anyone that buys this garbage.
Voucher Nonsense? How bout . . rejection of failed system!  Mar 27, 2005
This book is excellent - gives a good view into the self-indulgent politics of the left and the labor unions that protect teachers from any sort of accountability. The root problem today in education is the Teachers Unions. They extort their demands like a group of terrorists and assure that no teacher can ever be held accountable for results.

Thank goodness for No Child Left Behind - we must start forcing accountability onto these socialists like William who reject the idea of a meritocracy. Naturally William tries to fear-monger with Segregationist and Fundamental Christian nonsense - his arguments can't stand on their own merit.

Get rid of the NEA and the AFT and we're well on the way to a solution for a failed eduation system that is overly protected by liberals who despise meritocracy and embrace the failed notions of socialism.
Amazing and real eye opening!  Jan 20, 2000
One of the most controversial issues ruling the political agendas to is education and the NEA. Education rapid decline over the years is often blamed on the parents and teachers, Greg Moo has different ideas and you might want to pull up a desk and listen.

From a background of a high school principal, Moo's first hand look into what the NEA has been and is doing to our education system is simply remarkable. Moo's detailed evidence to the NEA's wanting to control the system and its misuse of power is amazing.

Moo's shows you how the NEA use, or misuses, its power to makes the teachers union do its bidding. You'll read about how the NEA blocks any and all legislation that will diminish it power and how it intimidates the teachers.

Moo has given you the first in-depth, comprehensive look at why our education system is failing, why we can't makes the needed changes with the NEA in control and what steps must be taken to fix the problems. We have a first rate bestseller and a real eye opener - well done!

A "Must Read"  Dec 9, 1999
Every taxpayer in the country should read this book. An excellent resource, it describes in clear detail why our public schools are not able to help prepare our children to meet the demands of their future. As taxpayers, we have lost control of where and how our school's resources are being spent, and it is time for parents, teachers, and community to take action. We must insist that the needs of children take priority over NEA political agendas. We must regain control of our schools if we expect our nation to have a meaningful future.
Power Grab: How the National Education Association Is Betray  Dec 7, 1999
A well written book which exposes the power of the NEA and its disconnect with those it purports to represent. It exposes what everyone knows to be a failed experiment (American public education) by identifying how the system has become more precious than the children it claims to serve. Even officials of the NEA are on record indicating that education must be "put on the back burner" in order to pursue their political agenda.
