Item Description...
Description: It is the thesis of this study that in Calvin's theology, poverty and affliction--not splendor and glory--mark and manifest the kingdom of God on earth. Poverty makes the kingdom visible to the eyes and therefore recognizable as divine. Poverty acts to reveal or disclose that which is spiritual, or that which is ""of God"" in the Christian faith. This does not mean that Calvin sees the condition of physical poverty as revelatory in and of itself. Rather, poverty and affliction function as agents of divine revelation. They are a condition or a chosen instrument God uses to disclose to humanity the nature of true spirituality, godliness, and poverty of spirit. How this is demonstrated in Calvin's thought depends upon the specific doctrine under examination. This study explores three particular areas in Calvin's theology where his theological understanding of spiritual poverty and physical poverty (or affliction) intersect--his Christology, his doctrine of the Christian life, and his ecclesiology. About the Contributor(s): Bonnie L. Pattison received her PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary and teaches theology, historical theology and ethics at Wheaton College. She has also taught at North Park University in Chicago and the Cameroon Baptist Theological Seminary in West Africa.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Excellent, Informative, Illuminating, Entertaining Read  Feb 18, 2008
I am a novice theologian (Medical Student)with a passion to serve the poor, but I get frustrated that many of the postmodern Christian voices that speak to this subject have lost their power to speak because they have made service to the poor the ultimate end, not the means. This book is a well-written, easily readable, refreshing, historically rooted, unbiased examination of the development of the theology of poverty over the ages of church history. I would definitely suggest this book to any person interest be in theologian or passionate layperson looking to develop a framework with which to approach this issues facing our day. Enjoy!
She Is The Prosperity Teacher's Nemesis  Sep 21, 2007
No shortcuts to wealth. No gimmicks to power. No steps to a comfortable life. No charters for elitism. No tricks on the mind about man's pride.

WARNING: to those who have a sincere desire to learn the truth, according to Scripture.

It is a difficult and arduous road, the one whereon we are challenged to pick up our cross daily and die unto self. It does not cater to self-indulgence of any kind.

'To the person of faith, Christ's stripping (of His garments) stands as material evidence that Christ's righteousness and spiritual riches are imputed to the believer.' pg 171

'God's favor does not change the fact that in reality the believer may continue to suffer, any more than Christ's knowledge of His Father's favor towards His obedience mitigated the suffering of the Cross.' pg 205

Pattison has a firm grasp on John Calvin. (*In a recent poll by Barna, Calvin was voted the top Theologian of all time.) She relentlessly, yet honestly stays her course and exemplifies the views of Calvin:

'God lays the burden of the Cross on both good and bad men, unless they willingly bend their shoulders to it, they are NOT said to bear the Cross.' pg 220

'God delays His aid and to outward appearances He forsakes His faithful ones, in order at length to help them at a more convenient time, according to the greatness of their necessity and affliction. From this it follows that He by no means ceases from the exercise of His office.' pg 228

'...and all the rest of the righteous acquire increasing confidence in His grace; for unless we are fully persuaded that God exercises a care about men and human affairs, we must necessarily be troubled with constant anxiety.' pg 229

'And certainly, as things are today, there is no need to be surprised if such a deformed state of the Church is frightening them away...In truth, the only people who stumble on this stone and the only people kept back by this stumbling block are those who do not discern the spiritual kingdom of Christ. For those who allow neither stable in which Christ was born, nor the Cross on which He hung to prevent them from giving honor to the King Himself, will not in the least despise the poor condition of His Church.' pg 249

A Church that is 'well favored in every way, flourishing with wealth and influence, enjoying unbroken peace...will it not have the appearance of an earthly power?' pg 249

John Calvin was truly immune to duplicity.

How does she succeed in calling our integrity into question? How do her views correspond to the mandate we receive in the Bible?

I would want to criticise this topic. Yet I am indulgent enough to know that it was all true. Every last morsel and crumb related to an over-fed, grossly unethical, selfishly self-absorbed Christianity. So I can only acquiesce and repent.

'...but would bring NO benefit to the healthy, righteous and rich - if such could be found.. to despair in ourselves so that we may be comforted in Him...' Calvin, Institutes, 4.17.32
