This book is written as a reply to Dr. Geisler, but is much more; it is a defense of the very principles upon which the Protestant Reformation was founded

Publishers Description
What is Dr. Geisler warning the Christian community about in his book, "Chosen But Free""? A new cult? Secularism? False prophesy scenarios? No. Dr. Geisler is sounding the alarm about a system of beliefs commonly called "Calvinism." He insists that this belief system is "theologically inconsistent, philosophically insufficient, and morally repugnant." This book is written as a reply to Dr. Geisler, but is much more; it is a defense of the very principles upon which the Protestant Reformation was founded.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
a thorough and devastating response  Sep 20, 2007
Norman Geisler's "Chosen But Free" was probably one of the worst books he ever wrote. It's horrendous charicature of historic Calvinism, redefinition of terms, surface level arguments and unargued bias were completely unworthy of a person of Dr. Geisler's intellectual stature. Unfortunately, those who were already predisposed toward a strong dislike of Calvinism thought it was fantastic. James White quite simply destroys Geisler's arguments through his strong point...thorough biblical exegesis. He shows that historic Calvinism is, in fact, the teaching of Scripture and that Geisler's "moderate calvinism" is quite simply nothing more than inconsistent Arminianism (he doesn't like the idea that we can fall away from the faith). For anyone struggling through the doctrines of election, predestination, or other facets of Calvinism, this book is definitely for you. You don't need to read "Chosen But Free" first to understand what is being said (and I would recommend you save your time and money).
A Review of Geisler's Book?  Aug 10, 2007
White is a brilliant young scholar. However, "The Potter's Freedom" is not what it is said to be - a review of Geisler's "Chosen But Free" book. One can easily test this by trying to match up what White claims Geisler says/believes with what he actually says. You'll have a difficult time. I'm wondering whether or not White even read Geisler's book.

Also, many Strong Calvinists who are set in their thoughts about Salvation Theology continue to be elitist and condescending by triumphantly claiming their superior scholarship. All the reviews (and theologians themselves) that dis Geisler's scholarship are foolish. Personally, I don't believe everything Geisler advocates - however, he is one of the most brilliant theologians of all.

If Strong Calvinists wish to influence the thoughts of the rest of us, they should drop the "we're smart - you're stupid" routine.

James White is superb. Norm Geisler is substandard. White reasons soundly from Scripture. Geisler is a master of avoidance. White is exegetical. Geisler is eisegetical.

James White has silenced the best arguments that Arminians can propose in this volume. Geisler refers to himself as a moderate Calvinists, but really he is an Arminian. He can't hide. He tried, but he was exposed. His covering of terminologies were ably removed by the argumentations of James R White.

The absolute best modern defense of the Doctrines of Grace!  Dec 7, 2006
If I had to choose any modern text to defend the doctrines of grace, it would be "The Potter's Freedom" by James White. Well over 6 years ago, Dr. Norman Geisler wrote a book called "Chosen but Free." At first glance, one might think that "chosen but free" might be a defense of Calvinism, hence the word "chosen." But what James White effectively demonstrates is that Dr. Geisler will have nothing to do with what he called, "extreme Calvinism." But because I haven't read Dr. Geislers book, thus rendering it unfair for me to comment on it, I will choose not to comment on James' refutations. Fortunately, "The Potter's Freedom" is more than a refutation of "Chosen but Free," but a defense of the Reformation.

Many protestants (particularly baptists) are unfamiliar with their roots. If you fit into this category, it would be of much interest for you to find out where you came from. Most people who have had any kind of History course knows enough about the Reformation to know that the Catholic Church split as a result of Martin Luther. But little do they know what started all the controversy. Was it over the sacraments? Indulgences? The Mass? Purgatory? No. It was a debate between Luther and Erasemus over the depravity of man. In fact, Luther wrote a book called "The bondage of the will" which is still in print today. In it, Luther discusses the fact that man is enslaved to sin and incapable of generating saving faith within himself. Therefore, something needs to happen that is out of man's control!

This is where God comes into the picture. God saves us because we are incapable of saving ourselves! It is more than mere cooperation between God and man; God saves. This is one of the major themes in Dr. White's book. Dr. Geisler presents a man-centered gospel while James White proclaims a man-centered one. Dr. Geisler believes that God didn't actually come to save, but to make salvation only a possibility. Is this what the Bible teaches? Or is God a powerful savior who saves perfectly without fail?

The introduction of the book is primarily devoted to the question, "Why write such a book?" Obviously, Dr. Geisler is highly respected among Christian apologists and scholars, so James White seeks to explain why he wrote this book. One of the foremost reasons is because James White loves the truth. Because Dr. Geisler is on such a high ranking among scholars, he should be held only to the highest standards of scholarship. Unfortunately, Dr. Geisler has failed to represent Calvinism correctly in most of his arguments. Therefore, James White felt the need to respond to "chosen but free." And i'm thankful he did, because the result was an outstanding work of biblical scholarship! But even if you haven't read Dr. Geisler's book, I would still recommend "The Potter's Freedom," as it is a defense of the Reformation and the Doctrines of Grace. In fact, I know of no single book which addresses the subject of Calvinism in such a scholarly, in-depth way than "The Potter's Freedom" does.
