Overview
"If heaven's a banquet, will I have to do dishes?" That's all Catholic mom Susie Lloyd wants to know. Marriage and motherhood have taught her the rest, including the things that are most important in life: "Metaphysical realities like the existence of God can get along without my help. Cleaning the bathroom can't." Homeschooling her kids has left Susie wise beyond her years: she's learned why pi is square instead of round, and searched out the best places to buy a cow's eyeball for the science fair. "In fact," she says, "Socrates had it easy. His students never interrupted him to go to the bathroom or ask when lunch was." Susie's husband is always there to support her: "Greg tells me education would have no purpose if kids didn't start out ignorant. He seems to think that will keep me from strangling them." Yet she's always patient, even when strangers gawk at her and her five daughters and ask: "Are they all yours?", "Are you done yet?", "Don't you have a TV?" Susie tells them that raising five girls isn't really so hard (at least not until they're teenagers). After all, "Daughters don't have the same needs as sons. They can live for days on hors d'oeuvres." So come along for a ride in Susie's full-size van as she faces the trials of Family Rosary and tangles with snide education experts, gruff confessors, and relatives who tell her it's time to wake up and join the "real world." But Susie's already in the Real World: a happy Catholic family on its way to heaven!

Cradle Catholic Winner!  Sep 18, 2008
Sweet and Charming! Great gift. Reminds me of another book with "Father What-A-Waste", can't think of the name. Great read.

Disappointing.  Apr 18, 2008
Usually I love books in this genre - Catholic mothers writing about their experiences, encouraging the rest of us along in our grand vocation as mothers of many children. This one was disappointing, however - it just wasn't written well. The book was a series of vignettes (sort of) of life, and while many of them were funny (she obviously tries to write with lots of humor) none of them held together with any cohesion. There was no overall arch to the book, no story, sometimes it seemed that there was no point. I couldn't ever figure out where she was going with the little bits of humor, and by the time I got to the end I realized that she never went anywhere. For mothers who need real encouragement in their vocation, I'd recommend Holly Pierlot or Danielle Bean instead.

Didn't finish it...   Nov 2, 2007
My wonderful hubby brought this home from a retreat at Steubenville University for me. He usually picks exceptional books for me and I very much look forward to reading his seletions, but this one was a flop. I read the first few chapters and realized I was not finding it funny. So, I skipped ahead and read a few more... I still did not find it funny.

I found the humor to be a combination of whine and slap stick - neither of which I appreciate.

Sorry, I really wanted it to be funny.

All the best to you!

The most encouraging book ever  Jul 8, 2007
I bought this book from the author two years ago at a homeschooling conference. I have re-read it hundreds of times...I almost know it by heart. The book describes the life of a Catholic Home-Schooling mom and it is full of the author's wonderful sense of humor. She makes us think and see the beauty of life. I would recommend that everybody buys this book for their daughters, mothers, friends. It is a must for any Catholic family library.

Hilarious.....and so true!!!!  Jun 23, 2006
This was THE BEST gift I could have ever gotten for my Mom for Mother's Day. She is a "graduate" of 21 years of homeschooling us. Even though she had only three girls spread far apart in age, she was practically rolling on the floor in helpless laughter as she saw how well it related to her friends who had much larger families. I sorta "borrowed" it to look at after I realized I let it slip through my fingers to her without getting a chance to read it....and now, with two toddlers and an infant and the prospect of homeschooling them (and undoubtedly some more!) I decided I had to buy this book for me now!!! I am waiting for a sequel!!! Susie Lloyd, you are the greatest!! Keep 'em coming! :-)
