Item Description...
In this unique work James Tunstead Burtchaell uses the ancient story of Philemon and Onesimus as a compelling entry into modern theological reflection on the unbelievable reach of the grace and forgiveness of God.

First published twenty-five years ago, this extensively rewritten edition of Philemon's Problem tracks across the spectrum of Christian thought -- from doctrine to ethics to worship. Burtchaell's provocative narrative demonstrates the profound insight that the father of Jesus is not an angry god in need of sacrificial appeasement but a God of absolute love. Burtchaell argues convincingly that the church's mission today, just as it was in Philemon's day, is not to offer a privileged avenue into God's favor, but to offer the privileged insight that God can have no attitude but favor.

A Theology of Grace that is actually gracious  Feb 20, 2008
Philemon's Problem: A Theology of Grace
Jim Burtchaell has used a variety of literary sources and non-religious language to explain a very religious concept: grace. His theology captures the generosity, love and standfastness of the Father as it has been captured in Hebrew Scripture, New Testament, and the early Fathers of the Church in light of contemporary insights and theological thought.
The true meaning of the Prodigal Father, who drives religious types crazy by granting unmerited forgiveness to the son who turns back to him, provides a solid insight into the nature of God and God's disposition toward his creation. Burtchaell emphasizes throughout that the Father is not changed by the sin of men and women (how can the changeless one change!) but maintains a persistent stance of love and forgiveness so that people who are timebound can indeed change and repent. His treatment of Anselm and Abelard and the confusing theology of atonement is worth the price of admission.
Jim writes with such elegance; his prose is beautiful, but non-technical.
Those who are born Catholic and those who are new to it can read this book profitably and insight.

Intelligent & Engaging  Apr 9, 2000
Very interesting, engaging, and easy-to-read study of the Catholic faith from the point of view of grace, sin, morality, scripture, and ritual (among other areas!). It was a pleasure to read this book and Burtchaell's insights are intelligent, but not uncomprehendable. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants a deeper appreciation of both the background of basic Catholic practices & teachings joined with some modern suggestions and observations (a little spice!). Philemon's Problem is also our problem. Find out why!
