An Excellent Book For Children!  Mar 14, 2006
Do you want your little Imps to fear the Lord and shy away from improper behavior? Then this is the book for you. Favell Lee Mortimer's THE PEEP OF THE DAY has been scaring the Devil out of children for over one-hundred odd years. Writting in Victorian England Mrs. Mortimer pulls no punches when describing the evils that could befall wayward children. She states in no uncertain terms that only by the will of God can a child be saved from unrelinting hellish torture.

Mrs. Mortimer suffered a great shock when her first love became a Roman Catholic. Mrs. Mortimer ended up married to an abusive protestant minister. Mr. Mortimer, thankfully, died early in their marriage, thus freeing Mrs. Mortimer to spend the rest of her life hating Roman Catholics, Bhudists, Moslems, and a multitude of other religious orders, and writing books. Her THE PEEP OF DAY was a giant best seller in Victorian England.

In addition to THE PEEP OF DAY Mrs. Mortimer wrote many other books including a series of travel books dedicated to convincing the Victorian Englishman that he should not travel outside his native country. Mrs. Mortimer, by the way, only left England on two occasions, once to visit Scotland and once to visit France. Eventhough she only lived a few miles from Wales, she never chose to venture there. Most of her travel documentary came from gossip and other authors' works.

Mrs. Mortimer most likely suffered from insantiy during her later life. In addition to scaring children with her writings, she once tried to teach her pet donkey to swim, almost drowing the animal. Her parrot suffered a worse fate, being made to lie on it's back for extended periods of time because Mrs. Mortimer felt it needed to rest. The parrot finally gave up the ghost after Mrs. Mortimer washed it with soap and water and dried it before the kitchen hearth.

Mrs. Mortimer is burried in her local church yard, but no one is exactly sure just where she rests.

Mid-19th Century Evangelicalism for Children  Apr 10, 2005
When reading any book, it is important to remember the context in which it was written: in this case, in the mid-19th century and by an Evangelicalist. Prostelization through fear was not exactly controversial at that time (ah, brimstone!) and through her sadistic writing Mortimer was, to her contemporaries, recognized "to be uniquely successful in communicating with the child mind". Indeed, the violence found in most classic fairy tales still popular today might not be considered to be appropriate for children were they not viewed through an adult lens of sentimentality.

Today, what is considered appropriate for children is deemed so by `experts'. We live in an expert culture. This could hardly be said of Mortimer and her contemporaries, at least where child psychology is concerned. Mortimer also wrote a number of travel books for children - solely from secondary sources. She didn't even bother to visit these places; not even Whales, which was a few miles from her door!

Yes, the book is filled with a nursery rhyme kind of sadism. It uses fear as a vehicle to create little Christians. Then again, it was written over one hundred-fifty-years ago. The book is interesting within its context, but is clearly offensive to modern child-rearing sensibilities. Read by adults it is horrifyingly amusing, but children are clearly better off with C. S. Lewis for their morality tales.

An absolute DISGRACE  Jul 17, 2003
I read this book at my Grandparents house as a child and it is enough to put any small child off religion for life ... I am a case in point.

Examples of text include "what if a great box was to fall from the sky, it would crush your little body and you would die but if you believe in God then he will save you" OR "what if a great knife was to run through your poor little body ...." I won't go on but it continues in this vein throughout with the quotes above and other such pleasantries .... !

All in all I think it is absolutely disgusting that this evil and absurd book is still in print!

I believe it should be burnt and certainly not showed to any young child who would probably be absolutely terrified!

In fact you could argue a case of child abuse these days if you tried to instill this sort of rubbish into a young and vulnerable mind!

If relgion is about terrifying people into believing then I want no part of it!

Good in the "how could this be written" way  Jul 5, 2002
This book is frightening. It is written for children and goes into graphic detail of all the terrible ways a person's body could be destroyed if the person does not believe in God. That is just what I consider to be the best way to illustrate how much of a lunatic F.L. Mortimer was.

I recommend this book for a good laugh if you want to see how far a "christian" woman will go to convince people that to be anything other than Christian is a terrible thing. Instead of convincing anyone, this sort of discussion leads to the immediate dismissal of everything any other Christian tries to say.

Read it if you want to laugh, but not if you want to know anything about Christianity.

Classic  Jun 15, 2001
This devotional book has been used for instruction of little children for hundreds of years. Written in terms easy for the little ones to understand, our family used it with much success. It sparked good discussion around our dinner table. I have seven children and finding devotional material that doesn't bore the older children or lose the younger is a rarity. I can't recommend it highly enough!
