Reviews - What do our customers think?
Sweet board book  Jan 7, 2008
My daughters (3.5 and 1) love this book. Its lyrical words are fun to read, and the "peek-a-boo" cutout on each page makes it a real favorite.
We adore this book!  Jan 4, 2008
We got this book at the library, but had to buy it! It's my new favorite gift book too. I adore the illustrations-interesting, realistic and beautiful, and the story has great rhythm. My one-year old son loves this book (picks it out of the book basket and brings it to me, then signs "again" when we're done). And, my 2.5-year old daughter also loves it. I love that it shows gramma and dad helping with chores and kids too, and even shows mom catching a quick weekend nap in the easy chair while dad pours the tea.
Not a hit in our house... until our daughter neared 2  Jul 5, 2007
I was hunting down peek-a-board books for my daughter after my mother got us Puppy Peek-a-Boo (illustrated by Lisa McCue), which everyone in the house (me and my husband included) loves. This book came highly recommended by other readers, so I purchased it. What a disappointment at first! The illustrations were too complex and too tiny for young children (my daughter is under 2) to appreciate, and the language did not keep her attention.

As my daughter has gotten older, she has grown to appreciate this book much more. Initially, it seemed the colors were not bright enough, she wasn't interested in the story, etc. However... now that she is nearly 2, she seems to enjoy it much more and is even requesting it more often.

I had recommended before that parents buy this for older children. I think waiting until 2 is wise. Earlier than that and it just doesn't seem to hold the child's interest due to its colors, language, and content. Once language really begins to kick in and the child is more willing to look closely at the pictures and try to recognize or name things... it becomes a pleaser.

Important note: I cannot change my initial rating of 2 stars... now that my daughter is older, I would give it 4.
Much to look at and a captivating rhythm--our son's favorite book!  May 24, 2006
We've been reading this book to our baby since he was two months old, and he's been enchanted with it since then. He turns the pages and stares at the detailed drawings filled with interesting people and things. We like the rhythm of the text, and it's easy to make up new verses about baby lying under the tree in the backyard or on the changing table. Very well done!
This lovely book is so much more than expected!  Jan 23, 2006
We picked up a flimsy paperback copy of this book when our eldest was 1 year old, and she loved it literally to pieces. After many tape repairs, we all still enjoyed the charming old-fashioned drawings of everyday life in wartime England, through the eyes of a baby. When we found the board book for our second child, we were very pleased.

I love the very detailed but naturally colored illustrations: so many baby books are full of loud and unnatural colors. And the rhyming text feels good to read out loud. Even after many repetitions, the verse is still fun to say and has a certain richness which keeps it interesting for parents. How many board books use phrases like "Grandma pegging washing on the clothesline to be dried," or "He sees his mother dozing in the easy chair"?

This is a book I will miss when my littlest outgrows it.
