Serving the Common Good and the Kingdom of God  May 4, 2009
This is the third book Fr. Morneau has written for the "7 x 4" series, which offers reflections in a format that fits in pocket or purse and provides small "bites" of food for thought. Having addressed the theological and cardinal virtues in his first two books, Morneau now turns to simplicity, gentleness, humility, and friendship. By attending to the theological, moral, and social virtues, Morneau explains, "we strive to reach our full potential and to serve both the common good and the Kingdom of God." Each weekly topic is presented in seven daily sessions consisting of short reflections written by Morneau and quoted from other authors including Henri Nouwen, Albert Schweitzer, and Evelyn Underhill. Reflection questions and brief prayers round out the daily entries.

Gentleness is the topic of the second week, and the first day focuses on "a diligent gentleness." Morneau speaks of the temptation to strive for perfection and success, relying on self rather than turning to God. "In the end, our efforts are minimal unless imbued with a spirit of love and gentleness," he writes. He shares a passage on the topic by Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal. They urge us to take every opportunity to treat others gently, and to rely on God's help. "He will do what is best for you, provided that you, for your part, work diligently and gently." In the closing prayer we ask for the grace to follow Jesus diligently with a gentle and compassionate heart.

This is a wonderful resource for individuals and small groups.
