Item Description...
Is divine love a mystical phenomenon of the past? What is the makeup of true love? What is the key to a woman's heart and soul? Is love enough to keep a couple under the same roof? These intriguing questions and many more are examined from the vantage point of Mahnaz, an innocent, naive Persian teenager in this best-seller romantic drama. This contemporary romance novel tells the story of a young Iranian woman from a middle-class family in Tehran, who discovers her true love, loses it, struggles to overcome this loss, and finally gains the wisdom to reunite with her lost love again. The Passage to Paradise is an honest confession of a Persian teenaged girl who discovers the ultimate pleasure of divine love but finds herself incapable of holding to the man of her life because she is too naive, too pampered, too out of touch with her inner feelings. The book is filled with bittersweet episodes of Mahnaz's exposure to real-life experiences. She is frustratingly truthful about showcasing her shortcomings and weaknesses. In doing so, she exercises something that most of us would not dare do--self-criticism.

Astounding... Superb!!!  Feb 25, 2008
It is not often that I pick up a book which I do not want to put down, but this was definitely one of them! This book was absolutely amazing! It is written in such great detail that every emotion is felt as though the reader is experiencing it themselves. The depiction of events was conveyed so wonderfully that when she experienced death, I cried. When she was stubborn, I wanted desperately to shake her and talk some sense into her. And when she found happiness again, I cried tears of joy. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who has ever experienced love or who has wondered what it would be like to do so. Please pick up a copy... you will not regret it!
a really great story  Sep 19, 2007
Mahsa, thanks a lot for recommending this book to me!!!

Oh my god, let me just say how much I loved reading this book, thank you so much Max for having this book translated for those of us who don't speak persian and to get the chance to read such a great story.

Keep in mind, I never really like reading books.
However, Passage to Paradise was my first book that I read and kept on reading, non stop!!!
It kept me always curious to know the rest of the story. I was quite shocked of how much I was so hooked to it and couldn't put it down!

Thanks again to both Max & Mahsa.

And if I read it and loved it, then I would recommend everyone to read it as well, cause you'll love, that's a guarantee.

Best Regards, Rania A.G.
Steeped in tradition  Aug 13, 2007
This is the story of a young Iranian girl Mahnaz steeped in tradition in a very close loving family. The family practices the rituals of life with some level of devotion to their Islamic faith but primarily through habit and tradition. Mahnaz becomes engaged to her neighbor Mohammad whom she's known all her life by the tradition of his mother coming to ask her father for his consent.

Implied is that they will be willing. In this case they are willing but for very immature and shallow reasons. This is one of the weaknesses of the story. It is understandable that the reasons for a teen aged girl would be so shallow. Her overall reasons are not well developed throughout the rest of the story. The central conflict is Mahnaz's immaturity and her extreme jealousy developed through an engagement contrived in this traditional household to allow Mahnaz to finish High School and Mohammad College before their marriage is consummated.

To a westerner this is an insanely impossible arrangement in the first place that could only lead to the inevitable breakup. The story progresses through dozens of scenes in which the reader wishes to scream at the protagonists "stop doing these stupid things. Get out of this irrational relationship. Stop torturing yourselves." Eventually they break up and eventually Mahnaz understands her jealousy and matures. No plot spoiler here, there is more, but I as a westerner was very disappointed that Mahnaz did not appear likely even in maturity to grow beyond the tradition of millennia. This book seemed written in praise of tradition.

The translation by Max Jameson was polished with only one or two clumsy uses of American idiom. There were several grammatical errors that a good copy editor should have caught. Passage to Paradise is a well written window into the Iranian culture and tradition. It is a book that has a number of sparks of plot and character. I would like to see what Nazanin Safavai could do if she set out to develop characters who choose to do great things with their lives like in Victor Hugo or Ayn Rand.
Absolutely Amazing   Aug 10, 2007
This book is amazing. I just can't say how much I love this book. When you start reading it you cannot put it down! It's good for all different ages and it has a good point of view.
It's a story of hope with a good ending. This book is definitely the most enjoyable of all the books and if you didn't read it yet then order it now.... STRONGLY recommended it!!!! You will be amazed when you read it yourself.
