Item Description...
Particular Friendships: A Convent Memoir offers a rare glimpse inside the walls of a Roman Catholic convent in the late 1960s. The young narrator arrives with gentle visions spawned by The Sound of Music, only to encounter the harshness of life in this secretive society. Her wit, compassion, and musicality foment a rebellion against rules forbidding expressions of joy and intimacy, as she struggles between allegiance to the heart and her vow of blind obedience to flawed and abusive superiors. Recently filed lawsuits against the Church suggest that the timing could not be better for an ex-nun's memoir. Part mystery, part coming of age story, this narrative seeks neither to damn nor to exonerate but to uncover the truth.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Enjoy This Book!  Jun 20, 2008
If only I were as eloquent as the previous reviewers. I'm not. But, I did want to tell any potential buyer of this book to just buy it, devour it, and enjoy it. You'll experience a full gamut of emotions from sheer delight and pride to profound sadness and despair. You'll grow to love many of the characters, most especially Sister Kathleen. Not so much other characters (the diabolical Sister Thomas?). What I liked best about the book, however, is that it tells of a fellow traveler in this life who looked around, re-assessed, and took charge of her life. And I can't help but think that considering those times, that took ba..., well, you know!
You won't be able to put this one down  Aug 5, 2006
Readers will not regret their adventure with this smart, compelling, and passionate memoir; I know I could not put this book down. As one who is not familiar with the Catholic faith, or any other religion for that matter, I was fascinated by details of daily life in the convent. Waites' style is downright lyrical, yet the text is also quite approachable. The author conveys her intense passion and faith for the Catholic religion while slowly revealing the dark secrets and deprevations of her convent experience. This book gets my highest recommendation!
A Catholic story unlike any other! Required reading for lovers of memoir...  Jul 24, 2006
This book is one of the most compelling memoirs I have ever read. Waites has told her story with staggering grace, compassion, humor, gravitas, and humanity. You've never seen anything like this narrative before, and you won't see it again. We hear so much about abuses of male power in the church, and the intensity of the church hierarchy. Here, the reader gets taken into a secret world of women, and learns that priests have no monopoly on sin. It's a story told with sublety and restraint, and a keen eye for what readers want. She's on the side of the angels!
Particular Friendships, a Convent Memoir by Kathleen Waites  Jul 10, 2006
I found this book to be an absolute page turner. It is a beatifully written and honestly told story of a young woman's desire to serve God and humanity in it's purest form. What she encounters behind those convent walls is in stark contrast with her burning ambition, it is a display of hypocrisy that only the Catholic Church is capable of. If you enjoyed Magdalen Sisters you will enjoy this.
From submission to freedom  Jul 8, 2006
Particular Friendships: A Convent Memoir

To me, this book represents the dreams, doubts, concessions, conflicts, and eventual resolutions of the passage from youth to adulthood and to truth itself. Isn't said in Shakespeare's Hamlet "This above all - to thine own self be true"? Written in beautifully eloquent English, it begins with the dreams of a young girl to become a nun and serve humanity for the glory of Christ, takes us through the rigors of training, authoritarian discipline and rigidity of rules in the convent and intertwines them with the pleasanter aspects of human nature with its desire for fun and adventure, its longing for relationships and its striving for human dignity and freedom. The young girl's unconditional submission to convent's rituals and regulations gives way to a young woman's thoughtful challenges to them, winning some and losing others. Separation of friends, being kept in the dark about a friend and other such inhuman treatment of the "nuns in training" did leave the young woman with deep hurt, bottled up anger and burning revenge. The honest rendition of how she got over the hurt, the anger and the revenge is an invitation to read that cannot and should not be turned down. Who amongst can claim that we don't carry memories of our unquestioned submission to authoritarian dogmas in one form or another, at one stage or another of our lives?
