God's Harvest Alphabet  Feb 11, 2010
Oh how I loved this delightful children's book from the start! The warm Autumn earth tone illustrations introduce us to the fall season with an abundant harvest of apples and Indian corn to pumpkins and quilting bees! I personally love pumpkin patches, the color of orange, quilting with friends and enjoying my garden. Yawn Ariel Pang cheerfully illustrates the joy and extra fun of country living on the faces of the children!

Kathy-jo is a very talented author who brilliantly weaves the heart of autumn in a beautiful rhyming text. Two messages are clearly stated by the author that every parent and grandparent loves to share with little ones and that is learning the alphabet and hearing of God's love for us each and every day, especially celebrating God's richest harvest blessings together! I love this book! ***** stars! Worth reading!

Great book!  Nov 10, 2008
I bought this book at the store after having picked it up to look at it. I love it! I have such a hard time finding cute, good books about God to share with my 2 year old that hold her attention and are relevant to her world AND are sound theologically. So many are just regular books with "Jesus" thrown in for good measure, but this one does a good job of showing God's handiwork through creation and giving examples of how we can be reminded of His presence through ordinary objects and events. Unlike the other reviewers, neither I nor my daughter found the pictures scary - they are pretty standard children's book illustrations. I give this book 4 stars.
Scary illustrations and poor choice of content.  Oct 13, 2008
This book fell well below my expectations. The top of each page gives a short story or explanation, told in rhyming verse. The bottom of each page reiterates the something specific that starts with the featured letter. For example: "Apples and Acorns and all sorts of things -- Let's find the blessings that God's autumn brings. A is for Apple."

The bold illustrations show diverse characters through great contrast and rich colors.

WHAT I LIKE: The text clearly represents the omnipresence of God. Almost every page talks about what He has provided for us and how He talks with us in every place and situation. It encourages a relationship with Him; I like that. I also appreciate anything that furthers literacy and reading readiness.

WHAT I DISLIKE: The split text makes it cumbersome to read. I recommend reading just the story at the top or just the letters at the bottom. Otherwise, it feels like a continual self-interruption.

The illustrations are odd; all the characters sport heavy eyebrows and cone-like noses. Everytime we turned the page, my children would ask "Mommy, why are those people so cross?" They even found some characters "scary" who weren't meant to be.

Finally, I'm not thrilled with the choice of words featured for each letter. I would have prefered that all references to Halloween be omitted. In this alphabet, D, J and T stand for Dress-up, Jack-o-lanterns and Trick-or-treat. Others will be unfamiliar to many children, especially those who don't live in rural areas. For example, the page on C talks about corn mazes and Q talks about the Quilting Bee. My kids (raised just outside NYC) didn't recognize these; they also didn't understand Harvest, Indian Corn, Orchards or Ravens. If you live in the country, perhaps these are familiar to your children. But if you live in an urban area, you may have a lot to explain.

Overall Rating: Ho-hum.

Tanya -- Christian Children's Book Review
Great content, Scary pictures  Aug 30, 2008
I was so excited to receive this book. It was something I waited a while to get. The content of the book is great - simple, easy-to-understand format makes reading aloud fun and enjoyable. However, the pictures a quite disappointing. I was hoping for more clean, vibrant details but instead saw "dark" looking pictures and unattractive faces. There is a person with a face on almost every page and they are not very nice to look at. I would consider some of them scary even. The other art work is well done just not what I was expecting or hoping for. I wish a different illustrator had been used to complete this work. I'm not a fan of Yawen Ariel Pang.
