OVERCOMING RUNAWAY BLOD SUGAR IN LESS THAN 20 DAYS  Feb 20, 2007
I PURCHASED OVERCOMING RUNAWAY BLOOD SUGAR BY DENNIS POLLACK ON 21 OCTOBER 2006. I READ THE BOOK IN LESS THAN (3) THREE HOURS. IN THAT SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME I KNEW EXACTLY HOW TO GET RID OF MY TYPE TWO DIABETICES THAT I HAD BEEN AFFLICTED WITH FOR OVER FORTY YEARS.
I APPLIED WHAT I HAD READ IN DENNIS POLLACKS' BOOK AND NINE DAYS AFTER STARTING THE ATKINS LIFE STYLE EATING CHANGE, I WAS ABLE TO STOP INJECTING 98 UNITS OF HUMLIN 70/30. ELEVEN (11) DAYS AFTER THAT ASTONISHING FEAT, I GRADUALLY STOPPED TAKING 2000 MG OF METFORMIN.
MY ENGERY LEVEL INCREASED SO DRAMATICLY THAT I COULDN'T SLEEP, EVEN AFTER BEING AWAKE FOR THREE DAYS. ME DOCTOR PRESCRIBED AMBIEN SO I COULD GET 7 TO 8 HOURS OF SLEEP EVERY NIGHT.
NOW ON 19 FEBRUARY 2007 MY WEIGHT HAS GONE FROM 263, A TIGHT 46 INCH WAIST, TO THIS DAY I WEIGH 221 LBS AND WEAR A VERY LOOSE SIZE 36 PANTS, SOON TO BE SIZE 34. MY CHOLESTROL IS 116, FASTING BLOOD SUGAR IS 109.
THE ATKINS LIFE STYLE OF EATING IS SAVING ME OVER $6500.00 A YEAR, BY NOT HAVING TO INJECT INSULIN TWICE A DAY, CHECK MY GLUCOSE LEVEL FOUR TIME A DAY USING TEST STRIPS, USE TWO NEEDLES A DAY, ALOCHOL SWABS SIX TIMES DAILY.
I EXERCISE (6) SIX TIMES A WEEK FOR 45 MINUTES EACH TIME. I USE A STATIONARY BIKE, TREADMILL. DP CABLE WEIGHT MACHINE, AND A ROWING MACHINE, ALONG WITH WALKING IN THE FOREST.
THE NEW LIFE STYLE HAS INCREASED BY SELF ESTEEM A HUNDRED FOLD AND MY CONFINDENCE TO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING THAT MY YOUNG 63 YEAR BODY DESIRES.
WOMEN THAT WOULDN'T LOOK AT ME BEFORE READING DENNIS POLLACKS' BOOK ARE NOW LOOKING BACK THREE TIMES AND FLASHING THOSE WONDERFUL SMILES OF APPROVAL.
FOR (62) YEARS I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO EAT OR HOW TO EAT, TO REDUCE MY WEIGHT AND BE HEALTHY. BUT, AFTER READING "OVERCOMING RUNAWAY BLOOD SUGAR" BY DENNIS POLLACK ITS VERY SIMPLE AND STRAIGHT FORWARD. WITH THE INTERNET SITES THAT DENNIS INTRODUCES YOU TO IN HIS BOOK, THERE IS NO NEED FOR TYPE TWO DIABETICS TO LET THIS GRUEL DISEASE ROB YOU OF A LONG AND HEALTHY LIFE, JUST EATING NORMAL EVERYDAY FOODS AND ONLY GIVING UP ANYTHING WHITE AND EXERCISING AT LEAST (5) FIVE TIMES A WEEK.
JUST GIVE IT A TRY, CAUSE YOURE WORTH EVERY SECOND YOU INVEST IN YOUR HEALTHY FUTURE.

Easy to read, practical and well-balanced  Jan 24, 2007
As the director of a Christian ministry for those who live with chronic illness or pain, I was interested in reviewing this book to see if I would find it a practical tool to refer it to the people we serve. It's rare to find a book on blood sugar published by a Christian publishing company. But I also had a personal interest. I have lived with rheumatoid arthritis for 13 years, (since age 24). I gained over 80 pounds over about 6 years of heavy doses of prednisone and other medications. In March 2003 I went lo-carb. 20 carbs a day, to get my blood sugar under control. My weight gain, the diagnosis of my mom with diabetes, and becoming a mom myself (through adoption) was motivation for me to go "cold turkey" and stick to a diet of no white flour or sugar. I lost 80 pounds in 2 years. I didn't eat a single french fry or bite of ice cream that contained sugar.

I found this book to be personable and easy reading (I read it in 2 hours while my son played at a kid's village and I watched him from the table.) And it reflected my attitude and choices that I made in changing my diet and lifestyle (not dieting, but a lifestyle change). So often people would hear I was "lo-carbing it" and give me a lecture on the health risks. But I made wise choices and Dennis Pollock's advice was nearly word-for-word what I told people --it was a series of smart decisions each day that got my blood sugar under control, and thereby helped me lose the weight. Like reaching for a cheese stick instead of a breadstick, eating shaved ice instead of ice cream, having sugar-free syrup in my coffee at Starbucks instead of the regular vanilla. And perhaps that's why I liked this book so much. I had seen nutritionists, dieticians and many others who had no answers for me other than "get off the prednisone." Easier said than done, at the time I wouldn't have been able to walk without it. Lower blood sugar led to weight loss over time, which in turn, reduced some of the flaring of the disease, and I was able to lower the dosages of prednisone little by litte.

Dennis doesn't pretend to be an expert or a doctor. He is "your average guy" who had blood sugar problems, recognized he needed to do something about them, and became a great advocate for himself. He tells how he gained control over it through a series of experiments (like eating something and testing his blood sugar), and the feeling of relief this gave him that what he ate really did make a difference in his body immediately. He --like most of us--wants to live as long as possible, and have good health during our lifetime. There is no guarantee, but the choices we make do help or hinder the odds.

I found this book refreshing, honest, and practical. I am not a fan of the "Bible Cure" books by Reginald Cherry, nor the many health books you will find on your Christian bookstore's "health" shelf. They often promise health or cures if you follow a few tips they've dug out of scripture and then use to prove their point--that God wants us all healthy. And they are making a lot of money telling people that God wants us all well (hmmm. why do we die in the end, do you think then?)

As the director of Rest Ministries, where I see people struggle with illnesses they do not want, and how they do everything in their power to "follow all the scriptural rules" as well as the "health rules"--and still are sick, it's saddening--and angering that friends and professionals still claim, "You could cure yourself if you really wanted to."

Pollack's book is one of the few Christian health books I feel honored to endorse and give my stamp of approval. As far as all of the medical references, I am not qualified to comment on their validity-but I do know that Harvest House is an upstanding, worthy, sincere publishing house that they surely fact-checked this book for accuracy before selling it.

Dennis, if you read this, contact me! [...]- I'd love to be able to interview you for our ministry.

Delivery was a little slow, but the order was around Christmas time. I'd order again.

A nice personal book on getting control of blood sugar  Aug 27, 2006
I liked this book. It was a first person account of an individual's journey to get healthy again from being in a pre-diabetic condition. I just returned from a physical where my doctor said my blood sugar was in-between normal and diabetic. I knew I had swinging blood sugar from my feelings throughout the day. If someone tells me I have a `condition' I like to read up on it. But since I am not diabetic, picking one of the books on diabetes did not seem the right way to go. Nor did picking a book on being hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic since I was pretty sure my blood sugar was swinging both ways. So this book was a nice find written by someone essentially in the same boat as me.

The author writes with a pleasant personal approach. He clearly is a practicing Christian, and I am NOT one, and while I too resent it when people try to push their religion by disguising it, I didn't feel at all that this is what the author was trying to do (compared to the reviewer below who took strong issue with it); his religious references seemed consistent with his personal touch mixing his core belief system into the book, and it was not at all overbearing or done overly often.

One thing I liked about the book was the emphasis on taking control of blood sugar by using a home blood sugar tester consistently throughout the day to get an idea of how foods affect my blood sugar levels. I immediately bought one and using it really taught me some lessons about what food can do to my blood sugar and which to favor or avoid. I know this is old hat for anyone with diabetes, but again, I think many pre-diabetics would never think of doing this and there is great value in it. His low-carb recommendations are consistent with others out there.

This book is definitely not an exhaustive tomb on blood sugar or diabetes, or even low-carb diets. It is not long enough nor researched enough to be that. I am sure there are others that do a better job on the science. But it is a nice personal story, and because of the human touch element it helped motivate me to pay attention to blood sugar levels, and in that respect this is a one-of-a-kind book.

Worthless Flimsy Attempt to Convert Diabetics to Christianity  Jul 10, 2006
When you pull this book off the shelf, it says nothing on it anywhere about it being a Christian propoganda tool. (Except the lower back of the book where it shows Pollocks picture and says he is an evangelist too!) In fact, it deceives by referring to a "Dr.", right below Pollocks name on the front cover, who only writes the foreward portion of the book, which is really the only few pages worth reading.

As a recently diagnosed diabetic, I have thoroughly researched diabetes. I have researched the types and cause of diabetes, 1 and 2, and much about the pre-diabetic limbo between healthy and starting to have physical failure processing sugar.

It was if Mr. Pollock was writing this book for a 6 year old child, but his facts were so incorrect and his information so distorting and irresponsible, that I immediately returned the book after reading it for a full refund.

Some of the idiocy of this book was that it was laced with nonsensical Bible passages throughout which didn't have a thing to do with diabetes. Pollock talks about the "hypo-glycemia" he experienced when his body starting to breakdown from diabetes, which can be a characteristic of diabetes type 1, but the entire book addresses type 2. Hypoglycemia has nothing to do with type 2...which is all about elevated or hyper-glycemia. He rambles on about how he snuck sugar to hide his symptoms from his family and then sent his blood sugar levels flying so as to cause him to shake and tremble. What he is describing is a very serious diabetic condition related to type 1...but again he then goes into talking all about type 2 for the remainder of the book.

Pollock cites the fact that normal blood sugar in an average person should swing between 80 - 120 g/dl (grams per decileter) throughout the day. Well...nothing could be further from the truth. Just check the American Diabetes Association website online and you will quickly find that blood sugar values are common to rise post-prandial (after you eat) to over 180 or 200 g/dl as part of normal body processing. Then after about an hour they should return to around 140 g/dl. That is the average.

He also cites in his book the terrible time when he recorded his blood sugar was once over 200 g/dl which was the highest he ever recorded it! Are you kidding me?????? I would drink 2 glasses of orange juice for breakfast with a bagel and jelly and my blood sugar level would spike to 325 g/dl. After an hour it would come back to 160 - 170 g/dl. This guy is just either uneducated, uninformed or trying to convert dopes to Christianity by using diabetes as a tool to grab their attention.

I could go on and on about the inane redundant examples he uses to try and fill this scrapbook with text...but he never talks about anything meaningful. Never talks about the effects of alcohol on "lowering" blood sugars. Never speaks about the important supplemements that can aid your body as you drastically reduce sugar and carbohydrates to level off your sugar values. I wouldn't recommend this piece of garbage book to anyone who is serious about understanding anything about diabetes.
