Reviews - What do our customers think?
This is a good book  Nov 9, 2006
The other reviewer here, says that Hauck simplifies depression.
Hauck does say that depresion is caused mainly by

1. feeling sorry for yourself
2. self blame

That may sound simple, but it is important to realize the root causes.
Furthermore, each of those two topics could be further elaborated on endlessly. It would also be easy to point out that stress is primarily either caused by anger/depression/anxiety/low self esteem. That does not imply that just because you can look at this in a simplified manner, that the solution is easy to implement (therefore simplistic), quite the contrary. If you felt bad about yourself because you feel it's your fault
that you are depressed, that is a manifestation of low self esteem, another topic that hauck covers in another book. I feel this is a great book, you can pick the book appart if you like, or find another book; however I think that what hauck says are the root causes of depression are true. That in no way implies it should be a simple matter in getting over it.

Inferior REBT Book.  Jul 25, 2006
Very near the end of this book the author writes "If the reading of this book doesn't do you much good, don't blame me, it is your fault". Very nice. Also interesting in that Hauck is convinced that depression springs forth from only three causes, one of them being self-blame. Hauck's statement seems all the more idiotic considering the fact that this other blame by Hauck--something which he claims to be against--may cause a depressed person reading this book to take his arrogant stance seriously, and therefore blame himself for not getting better because he read this book and didn't get much out of it.
Of all the books I have read on REBT this is the worst. Any three-page article by Albert Ellis is bound to be more helpful. The book isn't terrible, it just isn't very good. Seven years after the publication of this book CBT therapist David Burns would have his book on depression called "Feeling Good" released. That book is about a hundred times better than Hauck's effort. The major thing missing from Hauck's book is a step-by-step approach to uprooting depression. Burns provides it in his books and Ellis in his. The only reason I can see to read this book is if you are a relative of Hauck's and want to tell him how much you enjoyed the book--even if you didn't--at your next family gathering.
Wonderful book without dogma  Aug 5, 2003
This is master piece from paul hauck based on Rational emotive theraphy RET.If one wishes to find religious truth in psychology this is the book.Paul Hauck boldly states there are 3 reasons why we can't blame ourselves and others anytime, anywhere. They are stupidity ,ignorance and disturbance.Logically we can't say person and his behaviour are not same due to those reasons. This is exactly what Jesus preached in Bible. It is exciting to know modern thinking and religious thinking go hand and hand here.No Dogmatism.Just Reason and Evidence. This is a heart soother for depressed people could a life saver if one grasps this simple truth.
Great REBT focus on depression  Jan 25, 1999
A fabulous book based on the principles of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. I read and recommend Hauck's books on self-esteem., self-acceptance and the like. I highly recommend this book and cannot say enough about Hauck's Overcoming the Rating Game.
